I know very little about computers, but after a little research I am sharing the information below in hopes that some kind person can provide insight. Stupidly I had not Backed Up in quite a while and I cant get to a recovery point. Any and all help appreciated. While computer dumb, I am pretty good at following tutorials

Thanks,

I bought this computer online through an office supply store. Unfortunately, I dont think it came with a Vista disc. (is it legal for them to sell me a computer without a hard copy of Vista)

So I guess I am stuck...unless someone has another idea.

Could I buy a brandnew Vista disc or could I use one that belongs to my desktop? (although they may be different versions)

SAVING THE DATA ??
I wonder if I could take the hard drive out and connect it to my desktop. I read about people using the "slave method" to save their data.

although with CHKDSK showing corruption, this may not be an option.

Unfortunately, yes. I believe that all they are required is to provide you a way of restoring the machine to its original state.

Some OEMs provide a Recovery CD which boots you into the state where it uses an image in a "hidden partition" to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Vista. Others provide only an indication at boot time of a function key you can press that will do essentially the same thing.

Thanks,
Since I nevery created a bup or a recovery disc, do you think

(1) I could buy a brand new vista cd and use it for recovery
(2) use my desktops Vista CD (even though it is a different verison?
.....I am trying to save my data

(3) there is anyway to get my data off the laptop. Slave? Anything?

Since this is an emergency I would take the hard drive to the other computer and back it up. then you can download a vista image to the other computer and burn it to disc. Your other option is to use you desktops vista cd (if it is not a "recovery" disc but full vista dvd).

If non of them work. Microsoft is current allowing ppl to download win 7 for "testing" and you can use it for 120 days which should be enough to get you going and see if you like win 7.

Good luck and let us know if you need help

So my other computer's full install disc will not kill all my pics and other data?

Thanks again so much!

Any Vista DVD can be used to boot into a recovery mode and run Startup Repair. But I don't think that is going to solve your problems.

Hooking the drive up to another PC will allow you to copy files from that drive somewhere else.

Another possibility is booting into a Linux distro using one of their free LiveCDs, plugging in an external drive, and copying your Vista files to that drive.

But that involves downloading the ISO, burning the CD, booting from the CD (which may not work), mounting your Vista partition (and that may not work, also), plugging in an external drive (which it might not see), and then figuring out how to copy your files from the Vista partition to that external drive.

Note: I'm using lots of "mays" here because while, this sometimes works without any problems, it also sometimes has lots of problems.

So, unless you're interested in learning something very different, it's a lot to go through to copy off your files.

Would downloading Win7 on my corrupt laptop, compromise any of my data?, (especially photos) If not this may be the easiest. I certainly am willing to buy a copy of Vista right now, so I will certainly consider Win7,
thanks

I'm not personally aware of any way that you can "legally" download a Vista "image". MS used to provide that through a Windows Anytime Upgrade program, but I believe that program has been discontinued.

I'm new to these forums and don't claim to know all the rules, but I'm guessing the Mods don't want us telling folks how to do things of questionable legality.

But, I could be wrong -- there may be a "legal" way to do this.

In general, any retail Vista DVD can be used to install just about any retail version of Vista -- the version that actually gets installed is determined by the product key you enter.

What you need to be careful about, though, is that you want to do a NONDESTRUCTIVE reinstall, essentially, an upgrade to the same version.

I don't have the details handy for doing that, but I think there's a tutorial here on how to do that.

However, to be honest, I've only ever done this to repair retail versions of Vista; I've never done it to repair OEM versions. So, perhaps someone more familiar with that can add their comments.

Do you have a legit vista key on a sticker attached to the computer? If so then you have a license to use it on that computer.

Lets first deal with the data. Is the computer a laptop or desktop?

The data is on my laptop, and YES there is a vista home premium lable on the bottom of my computer (with a bunch of numbers and a product key...pretty warn, but I think I can make it out.)

Since Win7 is no longer available for trial, then maybe I can go buy it and install over (I just want to save my data)

MAN, I LEARNED MY LESSON. I will start doing bups and recov cds on a regular basis.

You can buy a copy of Vista Home Premium with a 7 upgrade. First download Ubuntu, burn it to cd and copy all your data over to an external drive. If you want to go this route the process is easy.

Otherwise try running chkdsk /r at safe mode with command prompt, followed by sfc /scannow.

Thanks Frostmourne,

try running chkdsk /r at safe mode with command prompt, followed by sfc /scannow.

when I enter in safemode w/command prompt, I dont get a command prompt, I am immediately taken through the recovery cycle.

however...in advance options

X:\windows\system32>chkdsk/r
The type of the file system in NTFS.
cannot lock current drive.

CHKDSK can not run because the volume is in use by another process.
Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?

And if I try X:\windows\system32>sfg/scannow
I get all the corrupt files I mentioned in my original post

I checked on Vista Home Premium and its over $200.00.
I will spend that much if i have to, but i really have already paid for it for the laptop.

I am going to contact Windows, surely since I have the sticker with the number on the bottom of my laptop there is someway they will know that i legitimately purchased this and maybe they could let me download some revcovery discs or something.

What is Ubuntu?

You can use Ubuntu - a linux OS - to back up your data if you decide to re-install. I can post the instructions if you decide to. Try chkdsk /f /r at the command prompt.

I was wondering if purchasing the $20.00 recovery CDs available for purchase from the Acer site fix my problem?

Would these be kin to the recovery discs I never created? I have to give them the serial number.... I guess I have been dumb because I thought that my recovery cds were a windows matter, but maybe it is an acer matter?

The recovery disc might not work and is a waste of 20.

Sounds like you are running Chkdsk on PQservice. You could try running it on the C drive:

X:\windows\system32>chkdsk C: /f

or try X:\windows\system32>chkdsk C: /r

You may better booting your Vista dvd and trying the system recovery options from there. ( Assuming it is the same bit version).

You can copy data off the drive from the command prompt - but you may find it easier using the file transfer wizard on the free Paragon Rescue cd:

http://www.paragon-software.com/home/rk-express/

If all else fails, you could install from your Vista dvd , using the product key from the sticker on the ailing machine.

It would be a good idea to d/l and save to cd any machine specific drivers from the manufacturers website beforehand.
