solved: How to extend partition?

i had 3 partitions on my HDD. i backed them up and deleted them to make room for a custom partition. when i finished deleting them the disk management said i had 2 unallocated partitions. i checked in disk part and it showed only my "main" vista partition existed. my vista partition is "partition 2" and i was able to extend it into "partition 3" (one of the unallocated partitions) via disk management, but i cant add "partition 1" (also an unallocated partition) to my main partition. phew! i hope that doesnt confuse anyone! any idea guys? or girls?

specs:
Toshiba Satellite P-350D S8900
Vista Home Premium 64bit
320GB HDD

3rd party app like perfectdisk 10, or paragon drive backup, will do it easily

hclarkjr i tried that and it let me extend into the "partition 3" but not "partition 1" the "extend" option is greyed out now. I even tried in diskpart it says there is no mre available space. But the management console shows that partition 1 is still there. i can even create a new volume on it an format it.

You might look for a 3rd party partitioning tool that specifically says it can resize and move Vista partitions. They changed the boot scheme in Vista and I suspect it's especially sensitive to the exact location on disk. IOW, it will let you extend the end of the partition into free space, but not the beginning because that would hose the boot up. You need a tool that's smart enough to fix up the Vista boot info when it resizes(if there is one that's free I don't know.. you could try Gizmo's list or TheFreeCountry.com)

Hi Friends,

Need your help. I have space issues on my C Drive. Need to extend the same.

I have single hard disk with 300 GB space running on Vista. Current partition is C drive(30GB) and D Drive(260 GB). Please see the partition list from CMD DISKPART

Partition ### Type Size Offset
------------- ---------------- ------- -------
Partition 1 OEM 47 MB 32 KB
Partition 2 Primary 30 GB 47 MB
Partition 0 Extended 268 GB 30 GB
Partition 4 Logical 2055 MB 296 GB

Following a post(http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/95418-disk-management-delete-extend.html) on VISTA FORUMS, i did the following as off now:

1. I did a delete volume on D drive. So now i have 260GB of free space next to C drive. Please see the attached screen shot for the same.
2. However i am still unable to extend C drive volu\me. When i got to DISK MANAGEMENT, the EXTEND VOLUME option is not available( Grey Color) for C drive.

Not sure what has to be done. Do i need to delete the FREE SPACE partition. Not sure coz it gave me a warning that if i delete the partition would become in accessible.

Please advise wht could be done to increase the C drive partition space.

Thanks in advance for your help.

the built in disk manager doesn't do a bunch of things. there is a 3rd party app that does it every time, and is easy to use, free for 30 days.

Paragon disk suite 2009

I would be better able to answer the question if you used the built in snipping tool (type snip in search) to make a screenshot of the disk managemnet console and upload it to us.

let me know it you need help with either

Looks like you have 2 GB as a partition with no drive letter assigned? Are you keeping it for some reason? If you can delete it, you may be able to expand C:. If there's a reason you need to keep it, then a 3rd party tool may be better.

Vista's manager may see that chunk out there as blocking operations.

but there is a 250 GB free space on the right of C drive...Cant that be used ??

i am not sure about that 2GB..i got a configured laptop..it was always there ...not sure why has it been kept there....and hence dont want to delete it
