Solved Pictures Folder disappeared

I uploaded 285 pics to a subfolder in the "Pictures" folder and my Pictures folder disappeared. I couldn't access it through the start menu, and an advanced search did not show any of my pics.

I re-established the Pictures folder by "adding" it through the WIndoiws Photo Gallery program (all of the sample pics appeared too) but my subfolder is GONE.

I KNOW I did NOT delete this folder. I tried a system restore - no luck. This is a brand new laptop and I am the only user.

I used a restore program at recuva.com - it couldn't find my pics but another one called "Easy Drive Data Recovery" shows them. In order to access them though, I would have to pay over $70. I don't think I should have to pay as these files were not deleted at all. I beleive they are still there - but Vista is ignoring them somehow.

I need help here ... any good freeware recover programs out there? Anyone know how I can convince the system that the subfolder still exists again?

Hello, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might see if the free ShadowExplorer may be able to recover them for you.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

The exact same thing happened to me. I was copying 132 photos from a memory stick into a pictures subfolder and when it finished, the subfolder disappeared from the directory. I tried the above fix. While ShadowExplorer did find the subfolder and its contents (but not the new photos I was copying into it), when I used ShadowExplorer's "export" function to get the subfolder back, i got an error for each photo and none would actually successfully export. There are 2000 lost photos as a result of this mess. If someone knows how to fix it, please let me know.

I just posted that i tried the same fix and it did not work. I was wrong....it DID work. Even though I got an error message, when I went later and looked in my pictures directory, the entire subfolder had been restored. HOWEVER, the photos that i was copying into the subfolder when the subfolder disappeared were not recovered.

Hello Sid, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Do you still hopefully have the 132 photos on the memory stick?

Hi there,

No, in my efficiency, I deleted them. However, I just purchased CardRecovery for $39.95 after trying some free recovery programs that were too scary (looked like black DOS screens) to use and it worked though a few were corrupted which might explain why this whole problem began in the first place....so, i guess my problem is now solved...thanks!

That good news Sid. Yeah, unfortunately after being deleted some of them may be corrupted when it's only able to be partially restored.
