BSODs! Please help.

Hello, everyone. I’m having a lot problems, and I hope someone here can help me.

To begin, I received my first BSOD on 8/28 (0x0000000a). I then had three BSODs on 8/31 (0x0000003b, 0x0000003b, and 0x000000d1), two on 9/5 (0x0000001e and 0x0000003b), one on 9/9 (0x0000001e), one on 9/10 (0x0000001e), one on 9/19 (0x00000050), one on 9/21(0x0000007f), two more on 9/22 (0x0000003b), and finally two today (0x000000be and 0x1000007e).

I, unfortunately, no longer have the first five minidumps. I thought that a few windows updates were causing the problem, so I uninstalled the updates, deleted the minidump files, and did a system restore to a few days prior to the first BSOD. Two days later I re-downloaded the updates (along with a few others), and everything seemed fine--until the next crash on 9/9.

I’ll upload the remaining dump files. Would someone please take a look at these files? I tried to use Windbg, but the debugger messed up my video control panel, and I had to do a system restore. I would like to avoid another system restore if I can.

I have BlueScreenViewer, and it says that the 9/9, 9/10, 9/21, and 9/22 minidumps have been caused by ntoskrnl.exe, the 9/19 minidump by nvsmu.sys (ntoskrnl.exe and tcpip.sys are highlighted in the lower box), the 9/22 minidump by fltmgr.sys (ntoskrnl.exe and PdiPorts.sys are highlighted), and todays crashes by CLASSPNP.sys (nostril.exe is highlighted) and CAX_CNXT.sys. Can anyone tell me what these programs/files are, and why they are causing Vista to crash?

Before joining this forum, I received advice on another forum that the problems may stem from problems with my memory, and that I should try re-seating the memory. Yesterday, I re-seated the memory and ran a Vista memory check; it found zero problems. A couple of hours later, I experienced the first crash of the day. Last night I came here, read another post about someone having BSOD problems, and followed the advice about running sfc/scannow. The sfc/scannow said that it had found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. A CBS log was created; however, the log is over 30 mbs and can’t be opened. Is such a large file cause for concern cause for concern? Any ideas on how to fix the corrupt files?

I should add that the first crash I had on 9/22 came after my desktop manager stopped working, and I few minutes later the BSOD appeared. The second crash came about fifty minutes later. All but two of the BSODs I have listed have happened while I was on the internet and using Explorer.

Also I’ve received a lot of event 10, WMI errors. My computer has all the windows updates installed and is almost a year old.

If any more information is needed, please tell me, and I’ll be glad to give it.

These problems are getting worse. Please help.

Thank you.

4 of the 6 dumps were caused by hardware not a driver the other two were by symented client services. Its hard to know which is causing which but given the stop errors I would say memory. have you recently added any hardware or changed any?

when was the first BSOD, the first in the dump was from 9/9, what are you doing most often when it blue screens? Does it happen after a while? could the computer be running hot?

Hello, and thanks for replying.

What happens if you just use Firefox? Will it happen with the same frequency?
I don't know; I don't use firefox. Should I give it a try?

have you recently added any hardware or changed any?
No, I've never added any hardware to the computer. I should add that I'm not a serious gamer. I've never done any modifications to the system--other than downloading Windows Updates.

when was the first BSOD
8/28/09.

what are you doing most often when it blue screens?
I'm most likely on the internet, although at least one time it has crashed when I wasn't on the internet. The one time it crashed when I wasn't on the internet was when I was playing Hoyle Puzzle Games. Hoyle failed, and a crash followed.

According to Event Viewer, the PeoplePc Dialer failed today and caused the first crash; that's never happened before. I was logged on, and the dialer was loading its home page when the failure occured. BlueScreenView says it was a 0x000000be.

The second crash happened while Explorer, Event Viewer, BlueScreenView, and Word processor were all open. Explorer was idle while I was looking at Event Viewer and typing out my intial post in Word. I meant to maximize Event Viewer, but accidentally clicked the close button instead. Event Viewer was accessing its log, when suddenly it froze. The BSOD then appeared. BlueScreenView says it was a 0x1000007e.

Does it happen after a while?
Yes, but I can't say how long between starting up the computer and a crash.

could the computer be running hot?
It might be. How hot should it be running? The last time I checked the BIOS on startup, I think the system said that one temp. reading was in the mid-90's while another reading was around 114.

- Download Firefox and see if you get a bsod using it. Firefox Browser | Free ways to customize your Internet
- Go to Gateway and download the latest bios and drivers for your system Gateway Support
- Just for the heck of it, take the side of the computer off to cool

He lives on this side of the pond so I suspect the temps are in F, and if they are the are fine.

I think we have to start looking at another way to fix this.

have you run a system file checker? it checks the system files for missing or damaged files. It safe and easy to run from search type cmd, then type sfc /scannow when it finishes it will tell you if there were any bad files and if it was able to fix them

Lets do this first

Yes, they're in Fahrenheiht. I should have stated so. Sorry, lemur.

have you run a system file checker?
I did one scan last night and just did another scan. Both times the scan found corrupt files and was unable to fix some of them.

The CBS log is 31.7 MBs. Do you have any program that can open it? I don't.

it really doesnt matter which ones it cant fix.

OK so sfc fixed some couldn't fix all of them. do you have a recent backup in case? If not you should make one (if there is nothing you need on the disk dont worry abt it)

next we want to try a repair install. You boot from the vista dvd and when prompted chose repair my computer.

Let me know

Ken,

I backed up my files, put the disc in, and restarted my computer. After selecting repair computer, I was asked to select an operating system to repair. I saw that Vista was highlighted, clicked next, and was presented with a list of System Recovery Options. I didn't see anything that I thought pertained to my problem, so I double-clicked Startup Repair, just to see if it would find anything wrong; it didn't find anything wrong with the startup. Am I doing something wrong? I didn't see a repair feature in the System Recovery Options.

Ken,
The options were Start-up Repair, System Restore, Complete PC Restore, Memory Diagnostics Tool, and Command Prompt. Which on should I have chose? I've already performed a Memory Diagnostic, and it didn't find any errors.

My son was using the computer last night and experienced two more crashes. The first was a 0x0000000a caused by ntoskrnl.exe, and the second was a 0x000000d1 caused by IDSvia.sys, with ntoskrnl.exe and nvddmkm.sys also highlighted in BlueScreenViewer. The Dumpfiles are attached to this post.

Both crashes happened with Explorer open; although, just before the second crash, he was using the device manager to search for a driver update for the Kernel Ports Device Driver. I don't know whether or not that caused the second crash.

Today I've switched browsers to FireFox. I know it won't solve all the problems, but I hope this cuts down on the frequency of crashes. Just have to wait and see.

blue screen viewer is a nice app but it doesnt tell you what happened just before the crash. It identified the faulting app correctly but both faults were caused by a memory page fault. Im curious. I dont think you are overclocking, right? and heat is not an issue, correct?

You may want to download memtest86 and run a test on the memory.

You know I just re-read the thread and its funny that I came back to the same feeling even though I didnt remember it.

In terms of the repair install I would hold off, because Im starting to think that you may be headed towards a clean install

Hope this helps

Hi Ken,
No I'm not overclocking, and I don't believe the computer is overheating. I've downloaded memtest86+, but I haven't run it. I'll run today.

because Im starting to think that you may be headed towards a clean install
So that's a re-installation of Vista, and everything that wasn't backed up would get wiped out, right? If so, can I save the Windows updates on a disc, or are they stored on the recovery drive when it was backed up last night? I'm on dial-up, and it would take a long time to re-download them.

Thanks for your time and assistance.
