problem with left click

ok, my acer 5335 is brand new and has vista basic. when i first connected to the internet i installed all available updates including explorer 8 and vista service pack 2. i also downloaded avg anti virus and sunbelt firewall.
the problem i have is that some links in some sites will not open at all, some need a right click to select 'open' from the menu, and others open as they should with just a single left click.
examples,
on my hotmail page, mails will open with a single left click, but the reply or new mail controls will not respond to right or left.
on autotrader.co.uk i can left click to view details of cars from the listings, but if i want to view the extra pictures i need to right click and select open.
google search works fine and most forum sites as i've been looking for a fix have been ok too.
the having to right click isn't too much of a problem but not being able to reply to mail is going to be a pain.
thanks for reading a long post, hopefully someone a bit more clued up that me can point me in the right direction.
cheers, pete.
p.s. going to bed now (uk)

It might be as simple as a mouse driver. can you go start>search>type event viewer, and go to the mouse tab. id it listed there, and is it working properly? If it has a yellow triangle on it or ins't listed there you need to re-install the driver.

let us know the results and could you tell us more abt your computer and mouse. are you 32bit, or 64?

kwn

morning zigzag, thanks for the reply.
its 32 bit with basic vista. acer aspire with synaptics touchpad v7.2.
strange thing with my problem is that its constant, some sections of some sites are always problems, others are no problem at all. this site i can get around without a hitch, but the wifes face book needs right clicks all the time.
i'm going to try the external mouse from my pc to see if anything changes.
cheers, pete.

nothing listed concerning the mousepad on the event viewer screen, and the same faults apply with my external mouse plugged in.
i was thinking it was something to do with different file types or sizes but when i've shown properties i can't see much difference between ones that will or won't open.
on the hotmail page the delete button at the top of my mail list works fine but the new mail button next to it won't do a thing ???

I'm pretty sure he meant the device manager not event viewer. In which case, it would be: start search > type device > choose device manager > accept UAC prompt, if prompted > under mouse or touchpad > any yellow triangles or gray boxes?

If this is a consistent issue with the same links then that would tend to eliminate the likelihood of a hardware issue.

I am beginning to suspect IE8, (as you are), but not an actual fault with IE but a possible security or similar setting that is preventing the left click from operating, depending on where the links lead - for example allowing links on the same site but not external links.

There is an item on the IE8 settings to re-set the application to defaults, this may help

you may want to open the No Add-ons, "Safe", version of IE8 and see if this helps.

If the Safe mode is OK then this would suggest that an add-on may be causing the issue.

ok, fixed it and feel a little bit pleased with myself for doing so (mechanic remember) and also a bit embarrassed to own up to what the problem was.
brrrrrrrr (drum roll). . . . .the firewall settings !
the firewall was set to 'block pop up and pop under windows' one simple (left ha ha) click and all is well again.
thanks to all for trying to help, i'm sure if any of you had been here in person it wouldn't have taken you several days to fix !
simple things may be simple things but they sure can hide well from the unfamiliar !
cheers all, pete.
