Can't defrag???

I have a file in the winsxs\Temp folder that appears to be related to the windows media player and is about 12 Gb. Every time I try to defrag my drive it hangs on this file and cause the system to lock. Windows won't let me delete the file or folder. Anybody got any suggestions as I need to defrag my drive?

What you need to do is take ownership of the file. right now trusted installer owns it and you are not a member of that group. instructions on how are here http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67717-take-ownership-file.html?ltr=T.

If you have a 64-bit system Unlocker probably won't help either.

Hello ApologetixFan, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might see if you can use the free Auslogics Disk Defrag to defrag with. It also has a setting to remove Temp files before running.

Brink, thanks for the suggestion. As a matter of fact that is the defrag program I use, and that was locking up the system on that file. That particular temp folder is not just your regular old temp folder. It has to do with the system dllcache and is not supposed be messed with (this from my research on the subject). Actually the suggestion by zigzag helped me to fix the problem. Thanks to all!

Actually, not entirely. While the lock up was isolated to the defrag process at first, now it seems that after about 20 or 30 minutes of use the system "locks up". Sometimes, just sometimes, I hate Windows.
