Vista Partition merging troubles... Can you help ??

Hello Everyone.

I am having trouble Merging two partitions on my Laptop.

I have Vista 32b Home premium with A 320GB HD

I have three partitions at present.

My first partition (21.9 GB) has Vista on it
My second (47.91 GB) partition has Ubuntu on it
and my third (38.9 Gb) partition is empty.

I want to merge my (38.9 GB) third and last partition into my first (212.9 GB) Vista partition.

But I am having trouble doing this because they a separated by my (47.91 GB) Ubuntu partition which is in the middle.

For example My disk now looks like this :

212.9 GB (Vista) | 47.91 GB (Ubuntu) | New Volume 38.09 GB (Logical Volume)

Does anyone know how I can now safely merge the last 38.09 GB partition into my main (First) Vista 212.9 GB partition ????

I hope I have explained my issue clearly enough.

I look forward to any help!

Cheers for now

There is a round about way of doing this using a 3rd party app. You can use Paragon disk suite to delete the empty partition, then move the center partition to the extreme right, then expand the left hand partition.

Hope this helps and let us know if yuou need help

Hi AstaLaVista

Great name by the way...

thanks for the fast reply.

So it is possible for me to merge the two partions together then, all be it where they are positioned!

are any of them freeware? Also would I need to create a bootable disk?
Or would I be able to perform the functions inside Vista?

Also what would i need to do to merge the first and last partition??

Hi Ken and Thnaks

Parigon is a windows app so you have to run it from within windows, but since it is making changes to the disk it has to re-boot during each phase ans when it does it will boot outside of windows to make the actual changes.

Make sure you have a back up just in case. I have done this 50+ times and have not had a single problem with it.

Have not use it to do that myself but I know they do it. I don't think they are freeware but they may have a trial version you can use.

Hi again.

still ineed of some help guys...

I have installed Paragon Partition Manager 9 Express and restarted my system.

But when I start PPM 9. and try to use any of the functions I am met with this error message:

"Sorry The wizard cannot continue. Wizard did not find partitions that can be redistributed".
"Depending on your system configurations and hardware some disks can be unavailable for the program".

there is an option to click on that opens more of a description. this says:

"Wizard could not find any adjacent partitions to work with on this hard drive. Note hard drive must contain a pair of partitions that are located next to each other (two Primary and /or two Logical to resize between".

I am new to this and I have read a few horror stories about completely loosing all data after perfoming disk aprtitioning operations, So I would appreciate any help on this please.

I am not sure what to do next??

Hi again ZigZag3143

I have been away for a little while because I have just been using GParted Live .iso after creating A bootable USB key.

I have successfully Managed to move the empty (38.08 GB) Partition next to my main (212 GB) Vista Partition and Give it the drive letter "A".

This means that the two Partitions I want to merge together are now next to each other. which is what i originally wanted...

But I still cannot use Paragon PPM 9 to merge them.
PPM 9 still gives me the same error message as earlier!

Also when I try to use Vista own Disk management tool. I now have more right click options, such as:

Open, Explore, Change letter and Paths, Shrink Volume, Delete Volume, properties and Help.

Also I was not sure what options I should use when I was using GParted Bootable.iso
becuase it was not very clear about how I can merge the two partitions together.

I did not want to attempt it until I was Sure what to do!

Can you give me any suggestions on how I can merge the first two patitions ogether now plz??

I have attached a scrren snip to show you how my HDD looks now!!
