Here's a problem. Without my Vista install disk in my DVD drive, I get an error NTLDR missing. However, when I put it in, the operating system boots up fine.

Why could this be?

the ntldr on your HD is either corrupt or missing. Have you done any deleting, or editing of the C drive? When your finished booting you can copy the ntldr from the dvd to the HD. It goes in C:\, or c:\boot (which may be hidden)

hope this helps and let us know if you need help with any of this

Okay, I'm confused. I thought Vista did not use ntldr. Did you have XP on this system and performed an upgrade?

If this is correct, you can do a startup repair and that should fix the problem.

The answer is yes, I did. And yes I did do a start up repair, and yes it did work once!

Then it went back to the same error.

Since NTLDR is a system file if you run a system file check it should verify it, or repair it.

Start>search>type cmd>right click and run as admin>sfc /scannow

let us know the results

Aha!

Please do it again. It may take more than one time. I believe that startup repair will fix ONE problem at a time. Lemme know...

Thanks for the advice. Came back with Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

I don't really want to go all the way back to reinstall, as a repair only temporarily works.

I did it three times - same error each time.

DVD in drive at boot up (or indeed any bootable disk), fine - boots to the o/s.

No disk, NTLDR missing.

have you tried this.

Boot with dvd in and when booted drag the iso to desktop and extract (with something like poweriso). take the folder "boot" and the ntldr and drag them to the root of the OS drive.

Dont know if it will work but cant be worse

good luck

Funny, I'd just done that as you posted. Same result though

Sorry for not looking around first. I am dual booting yes. The Win XP is corrupt I am sure of that - and I no longer have the need to use it, so it can be gotten rid of.

I have tried getting rid of the OS loader from Boot Manager using bcdedit, but still doesn't fix. All I have noticed is that the boot manager points to the XP drive. Is there anyway this can be changed i.e. can I make the change in bcdedit, then use the DVD to fix the issue.

sure

Im doing this from memory so it might be slightly off

To be honest it much easier in EasyBCD. you can download it and its free. In easy you view the settings note where xp is, go to add/remove and remove the xp listing. If vista is on the C drive thats pretty much it if not use the manage bootloader to change it to where vista is.

ARE you still missing the ntldr? you are gonna need that but I honestly dont remember.

Let me know

Good tip thanks. I re-wrote the MBR and the ntldr problem has gone, however now bootmgr is missing! I can still get in with the DVD in the drive though.

Repair via DVD has not worked.

Looking at EasyBCD, view settings (detailed), the Boot OS Loader is looking at the right place, except the Boot Manager is still set to the XP partition in the {device} tag

The file bootmgr is 375k and goes in the root oc the OS partition. If you can boot from the dvd its got one on it. just drag it from the dvd to root of C

hope that finishes it

Ok here's the fix:
Boot from Vista DVD and click Repair Your Computer. Now open command prompt and type:

  • bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
  • c:
  • cd boot
  • attrib bcd -s -h -r
  • ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
  • bootrec /RebuildBcd
  • bootrec /FixMbr
  • bootrec /FixBoot
Remove the DVD, restart your computer. (Fingers Crossed.)

Tried all that, and did not work. When I was in the recovery environment, it could not find a boot folder.

My guess is that my drive has corrupted to the state where I can only repair this problem via a re-install, which I do not want to do.

So I guess I'll have to live with it. Thanks for everyone's help though.

Well, easybcd did help in creating bootmgr, but I've now moved to the loader screen without the DVD but getting the windows boot configuration data file is missing the required information error.

I've tried all 3 fixes on the microsoft support site to no avail.
