USB Input Device Problems

I'm running Vista X64 SP2 on a dual quad-core Intel box.

I'm an animator and always use Wacom tablets for input. With the new Intuos4, I use the mouse that goes on the tablet as my mouse (pressure pen for paint work) and I have a new Logitech G15 keyboard.

I'm also running a dual Xeon XP 32-bit graphics machine which has been with me for several years and does much of my graphics work; Combustion, Cleaner, Dreamweaver, QFX, Max8, write animation scripts etc... The X64 system is for one thing only, 3DS MAX2009.

Both machines are in a quite rack next to my desk. The XP machine is on a 24" wide LCD and the Vista X64 is on a 30" wide LCD, side by side.

I thought it would be nice (and it would be) to have one keyboard and mouse (Wacom Tablet) for both machines connected via an IOGear dual port KVM. It has a USB connection each for the keyboard and mouse (tablet) and a VGA monitor connection. For each computer it has a 4' built in cable that ends in a VGA connection and one USB connection. I ignore the VGA stuff and I added a 6' USB extender to each host branch to run the USB up into the rack and then connect to each of the graphics machines. The IOGear has a button on top to switch between computers.

I originally connected everything up when both machines were running. It worked fine. Then I booted up the next day (making sure the KVM was switched to that computer when it booted up, the XP machine was fine, but the Vista X64 had a "no keyboard" message....then hung with a black screen right when it normally momentarily goes black and then the login screen comes up. (In all future attempts, the "no keyboard" message never comes up again.)

I connected a PS2 mouse & keyboard to the VX64 just for booting and logging. Having the extra mouse and keyboard on my desk defeats the entire purpose for the KVM.

Here's what happens now:
1. Booting with the KVM set to the VX64 and no PS2 mouse or keyboard connected. Get a black screen before the login that stays. No power/lights on the KVM connected USB keyboard or tablet. After 15 minutes, I switched the KVM to the XP machine. After 15 more minutes, I get the login on the VX64. I switch the KVM to the VX64 and the keyboard & tablet work. I login. But when I try to launch 3DS MAX, nothing happens. Switching back and forth with the KVM, I never get the VX64 back and after 30 minutes I warm boot the VX64.

2. PS2 mouse & keyboard, no UBS anything. Boots fine. Launches 3DS MAX immediately.

3. PS2 mouse & keyboard with USB connection to KVM but KVM not set to the VX64. Boots fine. Launches 3DS MAX immediately. Swtich the KVM and works fine.

4. PS2 mouse & keyboard with USB connection to KVM and KVM set to the VX64. Black screen, no login, no lights on USB mouse & tablet.

So if the VX64 sees the UBS keyboard and tablet when booting, with or without a PS2 mouse & keyboard connected, it has problems logging in and delays running 3DS MAX (oddly other software runs immediately and MAX has the massive delay).

In the past, if I wait long enough, switch the KMV off the VX64, the login screen eventually comes up. But if I launch 3DS MAX it does not appear right away. The software launches after about 10 minutes. If I clicked on the desktop icon to launch MAX more than once, after the 10-15 minute wait all multiple instances of MAX come up at once.

And somtimes when switching between computers, I loose one. Switching to and fro sometimes brings it back. Sometimes not.

So what's the deal with Vista X64 and USB keyboard and mouse? I hope it is something that can be resolved as a graphics studio should be lean, mean and look cool. This isn't.

I must admit, I haven't tried a PS2 keyboard and the USB tablet connected directly to the VX64 to see what happens. I haven't loaded and drivers or software from Wacom on the VX64 either. I suppose I should try those things, but I thought there might be a known issue with Vista X64, USB input devices, KVM's ????

Thanks.
