vista backup restore problems

so, from the beginning... (i'd like to thank you in advance if you read this cause its a bit of a long story)

firstly for some reason internet explorer started crashing (i honestly dont know why it was just the usual stopped working checking for solutions etc)

unrelated i installed mmicrosofts program to check whether your computer is able to run windows 7

after this i attempted a system restore in order to take my computer back to when internet explorer worked to see if it'd sort it out because i didnt know what had made it stop in the first place

as the computer restarted it stopped at the stage where you'd expect the log in screen to appear ... i was left with a black screen and my mouse pointer (which i could move around) and every time after shutting off and starting up again this was the result
as i'd had to just turn off the machine rather than shutting down properly it began coming up with the safe mode options upon startup so i tried that to see if it'd boot... though the difference in the mouse pointer was visible the screen was still just black

i finally decided to resort to a restore to factory settings (f11 on startup) and was given the option to backup my files so obviously jumped at the chance it requested i plug in a usb for it to save to and i let it do its thing

when it finished it rebooted and somehow it miraculously worked... prompted to install a vista service pack i decided to install hoping it might help the system as it was apparently a bit unstable

then the usual restart to complete the install..

and it was back to the black screen thing again ARGHH

so i finally took the plunge and restored to factory settings thinking that i'd be safe with all my files since the backup completed successfully

so here i am with a nice cleaned up machine that works (still no idea what happened to it) and 24.2gb of backup files that its created

002-007 are .fbw file types and 001 is .exe (description is restore wiz application)

been into the backup and restore centre
had to go through to restore files advanced since its saved on an external drive
i select that drive and it comes up with
"windows was not able to find any backup sets on [disk name]"

whats going on? and how do i get to these files?
i'd almost expected it to copy files out onto the harddrive which would have been a hell of a lot more simple

any help would be greatly appreciated :)
