Solved Please help. Lost everything in "my documents"

Hello, please help! My wife's computer seems to be going wrong, and it is damaging her new business.

On Saturday she went onto her laptop and found that everything had disappeared from the desktop. I found everything in C: users/mywifesname/desktop.

Today it has happened again, and not only has everything gone from her desktop but everything has gone from the C:users/mywifesname/desktop AND, more importantly, her "My Documents" folder. I've searched high and low (usual stuff, *.doc came up with nothing from her My Documents folder.

Her computer is just 2 months old, but nothing untoward has been done to it, it's well protected, no service updates installed recently etc etc.

Do you have any ideas (apart of being told to back-up things.... we've now worked that out!!!)

Anything you can do to help would be gratefully received. I have a crying wife - take pity!

Thanks all

You may not be finding the files because the search doesn't by default search the entire drive. change the pres, let it index then search. If it is on the disk you will find it

Let us know if you need help

Hello Wilber, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Are you getting any type of "User Profile" error?

You might see if the free programs Recuva or ShadowExplorer may be able to restore them from the original location.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

re: Please help. Lost everything in "my documents"

Thanks very much for getting back to me.

I've just downloaded Recuva and run it (after a bit of fun working out how you log on as an administrator.... but another page dealt with that!). It found the files, alas, what was left of them... unrecoverable. Luckily we've worked out that we do have some paper copies of what we need, so can retype them out again....

But each time I log in, anything placed on the desktop of in My Documents (and the videos etc) completely disappears. What's going on?

My wife did say that a while back that a computer dialogue box popped up asking her to do something with her individual profile - but (annoyingly, but can hardly blame her) she can't remember any other details.

Any ideas?

Thansk so much again

Wilber

re: Please help. Lost everything in "my documents"

Wilber,

You might try your luck with ShadowExplorer to see if you may fair better.

As a test, use OPTION THREE in the tutorial below to restore the default "Documents" folder location to see if that may be the issue.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/148461-personal-user-folder-restore-missing-folder.html

Also, check using the tutorial below to see if her user profile as a .bak at the end of as in the tutorial.

re: Please help. Lost everything in "my documents"

Shawn, you are a goddamn hero!

ShadowExplorer worked a treat, managed to find the files from 2 days ago to which only a modest amount of changes have since been made. Also, the profile seems to be working now. Not sure why it all went wrong....

... but will now go to sleep a bit happier!

Thanks again
