Solved Error 49: Conf page file for crash dump failed

My OS is Vista Business 32bit, running on a HP Compaq 6715b Notebook. In the middle of September this year I suddenly noticed following event error: Event ID: 49 - Event Source: "volmgr". Followed by this message: "Configuring the Page file for crash dump failed. Make sure there is a page file on the boot partition and that is large enough to contain all physical memory". I have not found out what caused this error message, but from that date, I find this error message twice every time I boot my PC. I have no other error messages, and I have not noticed any problems with my PC, as far as I can see Vista and my PC work perfectly well together. I am informed that Microsoft has a hot-fix for this problem http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955635 dated July 25, 2008. However, in this document Microsoft recommends waiting for the next software update that will contain this fix, if I am not severely affected, because the hotfix could create unexpected effects. Nevertheless, I have received a lot of updates after September, and I have still this error message. Any gurus or other experts in this forum having ideas what to do? Should I just install the hotfix, or wait for more updates? :sick:

Please go to Start and type in "msinfo32.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
Save the report as an .nfo file, zip it up, and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.

That'll give us some information about your system so that we can get started on trying to fix it.

The most likely cause for this is your pagefile settings.

Try this:

  • Go to Start and type in "sysdm.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter
  • Click on the Advanced tab
  • Click on the Performance Settings button
  • Click on the Advanced tab
  • Click on the Virtual Memory Change button
  • Check the "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" box (it's the default, but make sure that it's on the C: drive)
  • Then click on "Set"
  • Answer Yes to the confirmation dialog that pops up.
  • Click on OK 3 times (to close all the Windows)
  • Reboot the system

NOTE: If you want a pagefile that's a constant size, please set the maximum and minimum sizes to be 4600 mB - otherwise just let Windows manage it as stated above.

usasma, correct! For some strange reason, the "Automatically manage...." had been unchecked. For some time ago I decided to get rid of the event errors, and I have hunted them down one by one, by googling and now by this forum, this was the last error, now it is gone. THANK YOU! :party:

I might as well post here even though it's a 3-year-old thread. I am getting the same error A LOT. I have 4GB of RAM on a 32-bit Vista machine, so it's only using 3.1(?)GB and my Page File size is set to Min 200 / Max 8192. My C: Drive is 500GB and Windows is only using 117GB of it. I had set aside 100GB for restore points, but they all vanished and yet I still got this error again. Is there anything else I can check?

CORRECTION: My Shadowstorage, which I just changed to 100GB last week has reverted itself back to UNBOUNDED so that my hard drive can fill up again. Is there a log to check when shadowstorage was changed?

I think I found my own solution and it might help all those who are having this problem.

When Windows is set up for a crash dump, it seems to default to Kernel Dump. You can set it for the minidump or None and that sometimes alleviates the problem.

I also found out on a Microsoft page that if the page file minimum size is set too small, it will not expand itself to accommodate the memory you have in your computer during a crash, thus getting the error. For example, if your pagefile is currently using 300MB and you have 4GB of RAM, when Windows crashes, the page file will not become 4GB to accommodate the memory dump and you will get that error. At least that's the way I understood the page. I was seeing the error alot because my Windows is crashing alot and I had my pagefile set to a minimum of 100MB. I've set it now to 4GB and after a couple of reboots, I have not seen the error again. The real test will be when Windows crashes again.
