Permissions Problem

I have searched over the lands of google and these forums and I have come across similar yet not the same problem as mine.

It seems that files and folders across my C:/ drive have lost permissions to run.

Also, some new files that are created by programs can be not able to run because they are created without permissions.

When clicked upon, they say I do not have permission to run or move etc. I can change this manually by going into properties and owners and changing it.

I have no idea why these files are being created without an owner or permissions and I cant seem to get this to stop.

I'm running vista home premium x64
acer aspire
4gb ram
amd quad core processor

Have you updated any drivers for anything that coincides with the loss of permissions?

I had a similar-ish issue when I tried some beta sound drivers that messed up permissions across the board. Unfortunately I had to resort to a system restore to rectify it.

Are you using a 'Standard' or 'Administrator' account?

It is very possible that a driver could have caused this problem although I have updated so many that I do not know which one could be the culprit.

I think that it might be a good idea for me to perform a complete reformat of the operating system although when I bought the computer they did not enclose a copy of the operating system disk and I have no idea on how to restore it without it.

Also, I am using an admin account.

Before trying that, it may be worth trying a restore point (go for the oldest restore point available) instead of a complete re-format.

Even if restoring system fail,I'm just prepared fix for massive reseting permissions.I think you should try it :geek:

EDIT

I didn't notice before information restoring system fail.In few hours I'll give you my experimental fix.

I'm sorry I don't quite understand your last message. Do you have a fix for this problem? If so, what does it entail? I have already tried getting permissions and changing the owner for the entire drive but it still does not work.

Yes.I have idea how to fix it although I'm not guarantee it will work correct.Still I'm testing fix for reseting permissions and not for all computers it will work. But try.

1.Download SetAcl tool Browse SetACL: Windows ACL manipulation Files on SourceForge.net ,unpack file setacl.exe and place it in C:\Windows\System32.
If unable to do from your accout, place this file on pendrive and next boot Vista DVD and using command prompt move this file to C:\Windows\System32.You can also use any LiveCD to do - there are many option
Directly on C: place my file which I attached below (of course you have to upack it first):

Boot Vista DVD>>WinRE >>command prompt and type:

cd /d C:\Windows\System32
ren cmd.exe cmd.old
ren magnify.exe cmd.exe
ren cmd.old magnify.exe

Restart computer, boot into your own system,on logon screen click on Easy of Access centre and choose Magnify

Instead Magnify it will open cmd.exe from SYSTEM account

In command prompt type:

setacl -on C:\ -ot file -actn restore -bckp C:\FixPermissions.txt

Even if my command fail you can try run classic system components like explorer.exe or any good file menager and try to do something.

Good luck!

My Computer

Hi sorry for the late response. I put that file in the sys32 folder and the txt file in the C: Drive, but I don't think it worked. The permissions seem to still be wrong.

I think it's come to a point where I just want to reformat my drive. Although, I do not know how to do this without an operating system disk.

A did you try manually change permissions in console on logon screen? For example if you type

explorer

it should run explorer, stiill can't you display owner :( ?

Although, I do not know how to do this without an operating system disk.

I don't understand this. You have to reinstall OS from hidden recovery partition on hdd.Read manual from your computer or check manufacturer website

I'm sorry I think there is a bit of a language barrier here. Where is this logon screen? Was the program supposed to start when I logged on the computer?

Just to clairify, I am logged on to the administrator account already, but it seems the permissions and ownership of the files is being confused on my system. I have no idea how to change this.

An here is mistake. You don't log to any account (including admin account)

First try differentiate two things:

System -as a OS,here Vista

and

System - as special OS account which profile is stored in C:\Windows\System32\Config\systemprofile

Your task is log into System account and from this account try to fix permissions any method -using setacl commands which gave you before or manually using any 3p good file manager -unfortuately you can't run explorer (this means but it only add you taskbar and nothing more -detail below)

If did this trick

Boot Vista DVD>>WinRE >>command prompt and type:

cd /d C:\Windows\System32
ren cmd.exe cmd.old
ren magnify.exe cmd.exe
ren cmd.old magnify.exe
then you have replaced magnifier with console (cmd.exe)

Logon Screen which you can daily see it is truly logged System account only with very limited abillity, blocked defaultly. When you log into your own account you are redirect to your own profile. This trick (replacing magnifier with console) unblock ability of System account

Of course on logon screen you can do only two things

-log to any normal account
-navigate to Easy of acces left down icon (image)

LS1.jpg

Of course you have to choose Easy of Access>>Magnifier (don't log to any account!)
(image)

LSA.jpg

and this run cmd.exe from System account and THIS I mean "console from logon screen"

LS1a.png

I mistaked only one thing - running explorer will not help because it only add you taskbar it won't open window.

Images how it looks:

LS3.jpg

neverles you can try any coommands for example setacl commands which I gave you before,build-in system commands like takeown ,icacls

or just run 3p any good file manager (in example below freeCommander -other files manager like Total Commander should work as well) and using this file manager try change permissions - of course not each file manager have kind of ability,TC -yes.
