When Installing Windows From CD Boot

When you are installing a new windows after booting from a CD, when it asks you how big in terms of bytes you want it to be, is the number originally there, the biggest it can be (my number was something like 3000000 bytes)?

Also, when I look at my C drive in my compter, it says 142 GB free of of 298, which means it totals to be 340 GB, but the box the laptop came with says it has 320 GB total...could this have to do with the confusion about how many MB is in a GB? Because some people say 1024 MB in a GB and so forth. Please help, thanks.

Also I notice on my dell dimension e310 http://www.cnet.com.au/i/r/2005/desktops/pc/dell_dimension_3100_397x500.jpg

There is this bar blocking a space for a driver, you can see the one for floppy disc on there, but that is blocked my a bar as well. How do you remove them, can it be done only from the inside? Thanks.

There is 1024MB in 1GB yes.

Also, seeing what you wrote there, that is the default amount of space you choose to have on the partition you will install your Windows. By default it takes the whole drive, and yes, you do have a 320GB hard drive from the numbers I'm seeing here. You can also choose to lower that number and use the spare space to make a secondary partition for your data that you don't want to store directly with windows and that can be saved in case of a crash.

I know but why does My Computer my C drive is 298 and has 148 GB free space? Thanks means can hold 340...

Also I made a change to my post, I was wondering if the bars sealing the areas on a pc can be removed from the outside, the ones blocking places for other disc drives and stuff..

I can't help you for the bars, since I don't own a Dell, but someone will probably help you on that. What I think though is that you cannot remove them as I could not remove those in my HP case.

For the hard drive, a 320GB hard drive can only hold 320GB of information, not 340. The reason it says 298 is that there's always a percentage used for the master file tables (I think this is it, last time I studied hard drives was this time last year), and if I remember right, they take up around 14% of the hard drive.

oh ok, i guess that is supposed to be the unpartitioned disc space or whatever...

I think you can remove those bars from the inside, saw a guy's computer yesterday and it has like, 2 different dvd writers and one of them occupies that blocked space. It it can be done, from the inside it seems. Thought I could push-click it out lol.

Hey, I read from this tutorial How to partition and format a hard disk by using Windows XP Setup program

"If you want to create a partition where one or more partitions already exist, you must first delete the existing partition or partitions, and then create the new partition."

However I did try to install on a partition that already had xp on it and it allowed me to, and just said it wasn't recommened...though I guess...this isn't the same as "creating a new partition" but simply means "installing another windows xp on the partition" right? it was the one with NTFS written next to it.
