Colored dots and objects at top of screen...

Hey guys,

When my computer finishes starting up, it ends with what looks like blobs of colored pixels in a line at the top of my screen. This happened for the first time tonight and I have no clue what happened. I took out my video card and plugged my monitor into the mother boards vga slot. Same result. Then i used a HDMI cable from my monitor to my motherboards HDMI slot. Still, with the same result. I plugged my Xbox 360 up to monitor with the HDMI cable and it looks fine so it's not on the monitor's end.

When the computer is loading, the screen stays black. Then when my desktop would normally show is when the pixels show up and the rest of the screen is black. Any help with this is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'd like to see a screen captured image of it. But in any case, your troubleshooting definitely points to a bad video card. Start thinking about a PCIe x16 card, if you have a slot for it.

I left my computer alone for about 20 minutes to see what happened and the screen randomly turned on. I restarted it one time and the dots appeared for about 30 seconds and then the desktop came on again. I'm scared to restart! How would I go about getting a screen capture? Would print screen work under this instance?

Really depends on the actual problem, but I've seen some screenshots that were made with print screen that had the problem in them (like colors or faults).

And MDOC, I don't think it's the video card if the problem persists even when the card is not plugged in and that the screen is plugged directly on the motherboard.

Taking a picture of the problem with a camera is also a good idea if you're not sure about print screen.

Have you made sure all the wires were plugged like they should on both ends? (I presume you did though) Have you tried updating to the latest graphics drivers?

G'Day sciggs,

......you've got Vista, therefore you've got the Snipping Tool. This is off subject but may help you to post an image of your problem: Access and Use the Snipping Tool.

  • Click on Start Orb
  • Click on All programs
  • Scroll to the Accessories Folder, Click on to expand it.
  • Scroll down to the Snipping Tool, Right Click on it, and create a shortcut for the Snipping Tool to your Quick Launch Folder [Access the tool later through clicking the '>>' in your Task Bar, next to the Start Button]
  • To create a snip of your screen, Click on the >> in your Task Bar, and/or select the Snipping Tool [Scissors Icon] in your Task Bar. The screen becomes opaque and the Snipping Tool appears as this; Snip 1.JPGand you will see that your curser has changed to a cross-hair...'+'.
  • To set up your Tool, first of all click on the v at New. This will give you a drop-down menu of snipping choices. This is the setting that I use, mainly because I find it the most versatile; Snip 2.JPG.
  • Next, Click on to Options, and you are given another lot of choices from a drop-down menu. These are the options that I use;Snip 3.JPG.
  • To take a 'snip', place the + cursor at the start point for your 'capture', and while holding down the Left-Mouse Button, create the area you wish to include in the 'snip', then release the Left-Mouse Button.
  • You can then save the snipped image by Clicking on the Save Icon [purple Icon and here highlighted at the top under Tools],Snip 4.JPG, and saving the image for later recovery in either Documents or Pictures....that's over to you.
  • And this just gives you an idea how the Snipping Tool can capture the top of your screen;Snip 5.JPG
I hope that this quick Tutorial is of some help to you in fixing your problem
