Right click stops working??

Hi,

After booting up my laptop and reaching the desktop, the right click feature will stop immediately after starting up completely, and clicking on anything is a problem on it's own. The only way I have found to work around it is to Ctrl + Alt + Del and Switch User, then go to the power options and restart, as the conventional way of shutting down does not work.

I contacted my laptops manufacturer (ASUS) and they suggested that it could be a touchpad driver problem. So they emailed me the latest driver and I downloaded it. To my surprise, it actually worked..... for about 5 minutes. The right clicking problem still persisted.

So I looked into other forums and they suggested a problem with some Context Menu Handlers. I downloaded the suggested program 'ShellExView' and followed the instructions down to the letter on how to use it. Currently, as I'm typing this post, I have had to copy and paste patches of text because when the right click feature stops, the keyboard disengages, and the only workaround is the power button.

That didn't work at first, so I looked further into it, and it was also mentioned that some Property Sheet and Icon Handlers can be to blame. Currently, the only Property Sheet, Icon and Context Menu Handlers still enabled are the ones required for the laptop to boot up the OS. (shell32.dll's) This problem is still persisting, even with all these off.

The laptop is only 2 months old, and was bought off eBay (I know it sounds like the stupid thing to do, but I never thought I'd have this much heartache in two months..) It was fine, up until last week, when this problem started to occur. I have done a fresh format about 10 days ago, and even with nothing on the system other than ASUS Programs, the right click problem is still happening.

I'm about at my wits end with this dilemma, as not only have I lost valuable time sorting this out, I have grown to the point that I may have to sell it as defective.

If anyone has any clue as to what is going on with my system, I would oh-so very muchly appreciate the help.

Thanks in advance.

First of all...does a mouse work correctly? i dont know if you only mean the touchpad or the mouse or both. If it is only the touchpad...try reinstalling the synaptics(i think thats how its spelled) touchpad enhancements. Most laptops have this as the way of using the touchpad and setting it up preferences. If this doesnt work. Go into the device manager and uninstall the touchpad device. Restart and test. Third option I can think of is to do a system restore to before the whole thing happened. From there I am stumpted.

Hope this helps.

Hi Blackhawk, thanks for your reply.

I have a Microsoft Cordless mouse connected to the laptop, and that works fine, until the right click stops working, then the mouse won't scroll, right click or left click. The touchpad stops working also when the right click feature cuts out. I tried reinstalling the Synaptics driver with the latest driver given to me by ASUS support, but that didn't work. So I uninstalled the old Synaptics driver and rebooted, then it installed the mouse feature automatically and prompted another reboot. After that, I installed the new Synaptics driver and rebooted, but this did not help at all.

The problem with doing a System Restore is that it happened immediately after the reformat, so I can't restore it previously to the format.

I am stumped as well, because right now. I have to revert to using my old computer which is a Windows ME desktop computer...

Does anyone else have this problem or something similar as well? Or am I just deemed for bad luck.

Isn't the Intellipoint software the Synaptics software?

No, it is the software for a Microsoft Mouse...IE Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 3000. It allows you to customize your controls. The right click may be messed up on its settings. It will override the touchpad controls when activated.

Oh right, I forgot. The thing is, I have forgotten which Wireless Mouse system I have, and I don't know how to find out which one I have. I have a rough idea, and will try and download the software again.

Now this is going to sound strange... But my laptop has been on for the past 4 hours, and I have not had a single hiccup (touch wood). The keyboard has been working fine and the right click feature is still operational.

Could this be just a random problem or is it an intermittent problem?

Ok, I downloaded the latest Intellipoint software for my mouse (I figured which one it was; Wireless Optical Mouse 1.0) but Vista won't install it. It has known compatibility issues and sends red flags up everytime any part of the software trys to install.

Can you provide a link to the latest Intellipoint software for Windows Vista 64-bit? (The latest one that Microsoft provides is only suitable for XP 32-64 bit.)
