Restoring from backups not made on current system.

I had to rebuild my workstation. I performed a backup, but not a system recovery. Just want my files. It backed up all my files, but when I try to restore them using the restore client, it only shows a small subset of the files I had under my user directory. However, if I look at the ext. disk I backed them up to, I see hundreds of zip files. If I look into those files, I see all my missing files. How come I cannot see all these files in my restore client? Is there a way to fix this?

P.S. I have taken ownership of these files using my new account.

Why dont you just click and drag the files from the ext disc?

Use a program such as 7zip to unzip and send all the files to a folder then you could organize them from there.

I was unzipping the files, when I noticed that some of the zip files have the same name, just different sizes. Was not sure if the backup program broke up big files for managability. Thought that maybe the restore program rebuilt them based on the catalog file.

What program did you use to do the backup?
Also, how did you back it u? (DVD, data disc, other computer, online server, removeable harddrive)

The Vista backup/restore facility does not seem to work properly if you move to another system. You are not the first one to report this problem. If you can find your files in this mess of .zip folders, I suggest you recover them one by one as Neverhavemoney suggested.

Ya. What im thinging dkjones21 is for you to grab the 7zip program, create a new folder on the desktop, then unzip all of the files into that folder. Here, you can filter out any files you dont need or any doubles.
