Huge loss of memory per minute...

I got a new compaq CQ5034UK computer with a 584gb hard drive and had Vista installed just a couple of days ago. I put on some programs and and it took up a few gigs. Today I suddenly lost 50gb of free space without installing anything. After that I did a few virus scans with Microsoft Security Essentials and Advanced system care. they did nothing. I checked my hard drive and I lost another few gigs of free space out of no where. I keep on checking the system and gigabytes were adding on. I checked online and somebody said it was that the system restore points. I restored my computer to yesterday and it added on another gigabyte. I now 441gb of free space and I keep looking to see what's taking it all up but my calculations show that the stuff installed on my computer should only take up about 50gb. Some help would be nice.

WinDirStat - Windows Directory Statistics

go to the site and download the app. run it and it will tell you exactly what is taking up the space on your hard drive.

it will give you a picture of your hard drive representing file types pictorially and the space those files consume. for instance, the large purple block of just over 94gb represents my xpmode install in windows 7.

Well after restoring to the first day, all that happened was I got a little space back due to the programs being gone. and after getting rid of a few files it stopped adding invisible files, but it still had all that space. I was getting ready to take the computer back this afternoon and now the drive now has 478gb free space. I installed WinDirStat and all it told me was the "C" drive took up only 26gb. So where's all that free space gone and what is taking it up? Because WinDirStat can't seem to read it.
