For quite a while I have been getting the message "Windows explorer has stopped working".........whenever I try to right click a file in a file listing. I have been working around this problem but I'm getting fed up with it.

Any help to clear this up would be appreciated.

Go to an administrator account. In that account type cmd in search. In the cmd prompt type sfc /scannnow. Should correct corruption. Test it let us know the results. If it does find errors, run it several times.

Thanks for your reply but I haven't gotten very far. I am the only user of this computer and am logged in as administrator but in spite of that I only get the reply "you must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility". How do I tell that stupid cmd that I am the administraror even if I don't know too much about computer problems?

.

Try this after you type cmd in search, you will see the cmd prompt, right click on the prompt and select run as adminstrator.

Tried it and the reply was "Windows explorer has stopped working...."

Is there another way to let cmd know that I am the administrator?

I really appreciate your help. So far I haven't had any luck but I'm learning things I didn't know before.

I've finally been able to create an elevated command prompt and after that open a real built-in administrator account which let me run the "sfc /scannow" program. The resulting text file is 34,695 KB long and worse to read then the famous Obama Health Care bill.

You may have a suggestion what to look for in this huge file, otherwise I will try the bios boot remedy and if this fails I may go to a complete system reinstall or even switch to Windows 7. This is just as good a time as any to do this.

I can give a suggestion and advice.

The advice is that from this point on I think that you make a good back up. Keep it on an external drive. I have been helping out at this fourm for a while and at least 50% of the problems are cause by people who have caused their own problems, primarily because of poor or no backup

The suggestion, is if you think that you want W7, go for it. The public knows this is a great operating system. I had Vista for a year, when they had the preorder for 49.99, I grabbbed it, and now so glad that I did. Mac lovers call the improvements window dressisng. Are enhanced features that make work easier, window dressing? Are features that make computing more enjoyable, window dressing? I don think so. Plus there is a lot more to Win7, than I have time for here.

Cannot really comment on the file, but glad that you are learning. The best way to learn is to teach, I have learned so much in the last couple of months.

Talk soon
Richard
