I have a hp pavilion dv9730 running vista home pre. 32 I was trying to install a program from disc and nothing happened. I tried some other software and a dvd and nothing happens. It acts like there is no drive in the system. I went to device manager and there is no dvd/cd rom drivers in the list. The drive powers up and the light comes on and then shuts down. what should I do, I need to install some important software for my business.

Thanks,

Rodney

I went to the microsoft site that you listed and ran the fix program and it says the drive is missing or not connected. Well I know the drive is there but how could it be disconnected? I do know about a week ago I deleted some software and all the the cyberlink stuff, I did not think I needed it, could that be part of the problem?

Thanks,

Rodney

If that is the problem a simpe system restore will make you as good as gold. Give it a try.

Well Rich I tried that but there is a virus in the restore files so it quits and won't restore do to that. Norton can not see the virius in the restore files because it is not a virus until it comes out of the files. Norton spots it during the restore but the restore still quits. So I need to figure out another way to get the driver back in. If you come up with something please let me know. Thanks for all your help.

This is beginning to escalate. Now there is a viurs involved.

Believe me, I understand your situation, you are not just playing games online, your computer is essential for your work.

With a virus involved in the restore files, this becomes more difficult to solve.

The only thing that I can suggest at this juncture is to post in the security forum and try to get rid of the virus.

You can keep this post and possibly you will receive some additional help that will assist you in the short term, but that virus must be eliminated.

I will keep your problem in mind and post whenever I come up with an idea, even if the chances of success are limited.

I wish you the best luck with your problem

Kenny, no it is not listed in the device manager.

Richard, right now Norton has gotten rid of the virus as it came out of the restore file but it is still in the restore file doing no harm. I just can not restore the system with that virus in there.

Richard I am at the last site you sent me to. It says to delete the high and low filters but I do not see anything that says filters. Does it mean the files called 0000 and 0001

I have a weird problem that someone may have come across before. I purchased a 5 disc set from HBO and the first disc ran on my desktop but it couldn't see discs 2-5. My desktop is region 1. I put discs 2-5 in my laptop and it saw and played all of them. That machine is set to region 1.
I uninstalled my dvd driver and reinstalled it. Regedited the hi and low filters. Downloaded a firmware update and nothing has changed. It sees and plays scores of movies and disc 1 of the 5 disc set but 2-5 just aren't seen though they are seen on the laptop. The desktop is running Vista Ultimate 32. The laptop Windows 7 32.
Thanks for any tips.
