This happens when a chkdsk has been set to run but never occurred, or the volume is "dirty".
You can check this by going to an elevated Command Prompt.
Start, type in cmd in the Search box, when cmd.exe appears above, right-click and select "Run as Administrator".
In the Command Prompt box type in fsutil dirty query C: (with the spaces) and click the Enter key. (Alter C: to whatever drive letter applies if it is a different one).
It will most likely tell you that it is "dirty", i.e. has bad sectors.
To stop chkdsk go back into the elevated Command Prompt window and type in
chkntfs /x C: (with the spaces) and click the Enter key. It should say OK. You can then exit the Cmd window and reboot. It should be stopped.
