Missing Properties/Tags in Details Pane

I have this problem with the vista details pane and I have not been able to find any solution. I have Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium version. The problem is that:
1. My details pane is missing a lot of properties/tags . Only ones that are appearing are file date, file name, dated created.
2. When I go into a MP3 folder, same thing happens as I described in 1. Just the 4 tags appear and I don’t get any other tags that used to be there like artist name, rating, title, etc.
3. I cannot edit any Tag in the details pane. When everthing was working fine, I could go in the MP3 folder , I could edit the title, ratings etc. and Save it. But now I can’t do anything, the save button does not appear and the tags don’t go in edit mode.
Up till now I have tried the following solutions:
1. I have reset all the folder options in Vista by going to Folders/tools/reset defaults. (did not work)
2. After resetting the folders, I have also turned on the details pane option under Organize/Layout and the details under the Views. (did not work)
3. Under View, in the tool bar, I went to Customize This Folder and chose the Music Folder Option, All Items etc. (did not work)
4. Then on the Microsoft site, I found this solution “ Open Documents by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Documents., and click a file to apply properties. Then In the Details pane at the bottom of the folder window, click the property that you want to change, type the new property in the Tags.” But it did not work either as the “Tags” (shown in red) is not appearing anywhere in the details pane. Plus I could not find Tags anywhere in the folder options etc.

Another Microsoft solution I tried was “Open the folder that contains the file, Right-click the file, and then click Properties. In the Properties dialog box, click the Details tab, click the properties box that you want to change, type a word or phrase, and then click Apply. To add more than one property of the same type, separate each property with a semicolon.” This did not work either as the Tags (shown in red below) are not appearing anywhere in the Details tab (shown below), and the only details that is there is the same 4 properties I mentioned earlier i.e. date, file name, dated created. Nothing editable is appearing under that Details tab,

The hyperlink for Microsoft solutions is:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows-vista/Add-tags-or-other-properties-to-a-file
5. I also downloaded a utility from microsoft site , for resetting all the folder options to default and that did not work either.
6. I have also tried other utilities available on the net like reset-vista-folders.zip”, “Default Programs Editor”, “ExplorerView”,
7. I have already checked the system for spyware, virus, and for registry problems. Its clean.

I really really welcome any feedback or solutions since this is driving me nuts.
Deeply appreciate your help. Thanks.

hello

Is this only for mp3 files?

You said "when everything was working fine" what happened? did you download a new program? (itunes, vlc)

If it wasn't that long ago, you could try system restore.

Did you use a "registry cleaner" or an "optimizer"?

On the properties window, general tab, what is it set to "open with"?

good luck

oooppss missed some of your questions. Here is the complete reply.

I could not use the system restore cuz i regularly clean my computer and only keep the latest one. Also, this problem is been going on for almost a month and a half so i think the restore point wont go that far on my computer.

The details pane tags are missing for all the folder. As my email mentioned only four tags are appearing. This is happening with all the folders, including audio and MP3 folders.

Yes i did download a program, Stamp ID3 , for editing the tags of the mp3 files. But i uninstalled it as it was giving trouble.

I used the "registry fix" and "optimize" options provided in the trial version of the Advanced System Care software. It only took care of some of the registry problems. I uninstalled this program since it did not solve the problem.

On the properties window, general tab, I don’t see the option for "open with". Here is a screenshot of the general tap.

Thanks for your help.

My Computer

hello

the best we can hope for is to either do a repair install, or a system file checker to repair bad or corrupt files....

Here is a GREAT tutorial by our own Brink...... http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

And here is how to run the sfc /scannow (note the space between sfc and /scannow) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833 ........ good luck

PS: Did you use any registry cleaners before all the problems started?
The last option would be to backup all your data and restore!
If thats the case, is this a laptop or a desktop? (hopefully it wont come to that)

I think, I first installed the Stamp ID3 software, I uninstalled it. Then I noticed that its icon was still appearing on the desktop and in the programs list. So I downloaded and ran the registry cleaner to clear that. It did clear those shortcuts, but I am not sure if the missing tag/properties problem in details pane started after that.

Thanks for your help. I will go through the tutorial and if I have any questions I will ask. This command/tutorial, it will re-install the corrupt files or restore the default folder settings in Vista?

Deeply appreciate your help.

My Computer

Hello
So went through the tutorigal from "Brink" and it says that " This will not work if you have SP1 and SP2 installed unless your Vista installation DVD includes SP2:. This is my situation right now, I only have Vista upgrade CD and I installed SP1 and SP2 from Microsoft site. So i did not implement this solution.

The other solution you suggested to Prun the sfc /scannow", I tried that and the message that came was that no corroupted files found on the systems.

So i guess the only option remaining is to backup all the important files and do a clean install of the Vista?

Thanks for your suggestions and help.

My Computer

Hello

That would definitely solve your issues!!! one thing, in the future stay away from any registry cleaners!! (as a general rule)

Two things i guess.... can you edit your mp3s in windows media player? right click a file and choose advance tag editor. (wont solve the other file edit issues, i was just wondering)

good luck and let us know how you get along!!!!! :)

Hi, thanks for your adice, i will use the advance tag editor in WMP11 for now. But it would have been nice to have audio properties back in the details pane.

Hi Kenney111111
I checked and the the WMP11 Adanced Tag Editor does show all the MP3 tags and much more. Its also showing all the forlders and MP3s that i am pretty sure i deleted and did not need. I am not sure why they are shwwing up, I guess my file system is really messed up.
I downloaded a free program , TagScanner, to double check Tags. Very nice program i must say, but it does not show the same tags as in the WMP11 (even though i have all the tags turned-on in the tag scanner).
Anyway thanks for your tip, i will use the Advanced TAg Editor to do my editing.

In the "Details" view of, right-click on a column heading such as NAME or DATE. Select "More" from the options. THIS is where you can specify all the property deatils and tags that you want to display in the "Detail Pane". Make sure your file is not Read Only or the new information will not update in the Details Pane.

My Computer

Hi
Thanks for the suggestion. But one thing, this will only add new coloums, but it wont add any tags or properties at the bottom where all the tags appear and one can edit them simply by clicking?

My Computer

Yes --- First, add a column labeled "Tags", than at the bottom, in the Detail Pane you will see an editable "Tags" line that can be selected and edited. Just make sure your file isn't saved as read only. Open the file properties, and un-select "read only" to be sure you can write new attributes to it.

My Computer

Hi et1212
I have added the coloum "Tags" and i can see that in the lost of coloums. But there is not editable "Tags" line appearing at the bottom. I also rebooted the system, but nothing. I also double checked and neither the mp3 folder nor the files are "read only".
Thanks for your help but it does not seem to have soloved my problem.

Well I alrady see the details pane, thats not the problem. The problem is I cannot edit the properties in the details pane. Also, only 4 properties are appearing in the details pane and rest of them have gone missing. The only ones that are appearing are date, size, title and the heading. The solution that et1212 proposed is only for adding colums in the window, it does nothing for the details pane. There is more detail in my very first post.

Thank you.
