Boot Time

hello

I almost started a poll last week on the same subject.

I count my loading bars, thats how I time mine.

last week my loading bar count was 32, so I reset to factory settings,
reloaded everything, updated, and now my "loading bar count" is 9.....
so 144 seconds don't sound to good.

one thing I tried this week was to let "autoruns" handle my startup programs (instead of msconfig) that added 12 loading bars to my start time, so I'm back to msconfig if that helps at all...good luck

ps sorry so long winded.lol

pss my wifes vista machine is faster than mine

Hi Kenny111111, I used bootspeed.vbs.It reported the 144 sec. When I count the loading bars it's 7!
I suspect bootspeed measures the time from pressing the on button to when the desktop appears. That would include my Gateway screen, loading bars, welcome screen and the few seconds between each. It would be good to have a formal spec. and I would suggest that MircoSoft would like the loading bar time rather then the customer who would measure on button to desktop time.By the way I bypass the login screen and only MSE is checked in msconfig.
Anyway, looks like I'm fairly fast by the load bar method. Thanks for the reply.

hello rickory

maybe my "loading bars" is not such a good test, because although you have less loading bars, from the time I press the power on button , till the time can I click my browser button is about 45 seconds....

Kenny111111 and Hello Brummyfan, I need to go thru the Tut that you suggest. I've seen it before but a lot more has been added since then. The Gateway screen takes about 3 seconds and 7 load bars seems ok. The Welcome screen takes the most time. I'll make some changes using the Tut and see what happens. 45 to 60 seconds sounds like a good goal.
I don't think it's ram as I have 2 gigs running Vista HP.Ram usage is 31% after boot.Well Thanks a lot and will post back in a few days.

Hello rickory,
What ever loading times you get will depend on what you are loading at startup.
Lots of programs loading = high load times.

Go to run and type "msconfig" (no quotes), open Startup tab and see what programs are being loaded, any program you stop from loading can be started manually when needed, obviously, if you have sound and video programs that are needed, then don't disable them.
Play around with what is being loaded and see if that saves you any time.
Hope this helps, good luck and post your results.

As an aside to boot times I have a Toshiba laptop thet takes 3 and a half miutes to boot ( 9 green bars) . If I disable SmartVFaceSrv in the services section of msconfig
it drops to a reasonable 45 seconds. Not sure what it does or if its needed
