OK YOU HAVE HP - Can you access by immediately turning unit on and tapping F11 Repeatedly? If no, then try tapping F10 which will get you into BIOS and there you have Hard-Drive Diagnostic and Memory Test. Run those and more than likely one of those two is the issue. :)

Main Machine. Just upgraded my RAM to 8GB. Next task will be to get a new processor for this machine ( 9650 was for my secondary machine )
i can get into BIOS, unfortunatly i have rearranged the boot sequence, and that did not help. then i also did the hard drive test and memory test...they both PASS. then when try to boot it wants to run the recovery software thing...which is what the above results are from (so that fails) and then after restart, i get the blue screen of death

Do you get the BSOD straight away when booting ?, or if you can get to C > Windows > Minidump < zip up the minidump files and upload them with your next post, you may have to save them to your desktop first.

Thanks. I didn't want to assume that the computer listed in your specs was the same as your mothers.

See if disconnecting and then reconnecting the RTC battery helps. You will need to leave it disconnected for at least 5 minutes. This should return your BIOS to its default settings.

Have you tried the windows 7 32 bit recovery disc- it works great on Vista - Try startup repair using that - see if it helps.

Download Windows 7 System Recovery Discs — The NeoSmart Files

If it doesn't fix automatically, go to cmd prompt on the 7 recovery disc, type: ( press enter after each line )

Diskpart

lis vol

(find the letter for the Vista volume - probably C , otherwise use the appropriate letter instead )

sel vol C

act

exi

bcdboot c:\windows

bootsect /nt60 all /mbr

Then close cmd prompt and restart. See if that does it.

the repair could not fix the problem from the CD so i ran the cmd prompt and typed exactly what you suggested. it said that it was selected and that the boot files were updated. but after the restart it still got the BSOD!! it did show that there were 3 partitions, one for the cd-rom, one for C, and one for the HP recovery sector...is there someway we can burn the disc from the prompt or boot up from that partiton? or will that not really matter because the files are not the correct type? also, just today the touch pad on the laptop keeps dying shortly after power on. i know that sometimes hardware issues can cause weird overall symptoms, so could it be possible that the dying mouse pad is causing some issues? thanks for all your help so far everyone!
