System Restore Error: 0x80070002

Hey guys,

I need your help with this important issue.

When I try to System Restore from Safe Mode, I get a message (after the SR procedure, and when inside the normal Vista Enviroment), that System Restore was not able to complete due to an unexpected error. At this instance no error code appeared.

When I inserted the Vista recovery CD, and tried the same procedure (from the boot enviroment of the CD), I got the same message as above, but this time I got an error code, along with the notification the "the system was not able to locate the specified file". This was the error code: 0x80070002.

I run the "SFC /verifyonly" command later-on to see the integrity of my files, and everything came out ok, except the "recdisc" file, which is the file that I had replaced quite some time ago in order to make the recovery cd-using this forum's tutorial. But I dont believe that this is an issue, because since then I had in a couple of occasions used SR from Safe mode without an issue.

I also run the Chkdisc, with the 1st option only enabled. Nothing much there, since it only found some free space allocated as used, and corrected it.

I would appreciate your help in resolving this issue, since I feel rather naked without the SR functionality operating in my pc.

Thanks in advance,

TrDo.

Welcome TrDo

You are very wise to want the use of System Restore, as it is a very important safe guard. First try this

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial142.html. You may be able to restore to a time that things were working.

Since SR is not working, I would try the following. Turn it off, shut down the computer and boot up. Turn on system restore, this has solved may problems

If that does not work, type cmd in search, do not hit enter, right click and enter as adminsrator, in cmd type sfc /scannow. Although you used this command to check for errors, lets try again and see what happens.

After that try a repair install.

Hi richc46,

I have tried all three solutions you have suggested. With the order you mentioned them.

Well, the 1st suggestion I was doing all along, so nothing new there.

The 2nd suggestion, deleted all my restore points. That did not help either.

Finally, the sfc /scannow, again it came up with the only error file as the "verifyonly". The "recdisc", which couldn't repair anyway. But I don't think that this creates the problem.

Your final suggestion, the Repair Install, I can't do since my Installation DVD is an older version than that of my current Vista edition, i.e I run SP1 & SP2. Well, who doesn't by now, anyway?

I would appreciate any other suggestions that might help me out, please. To be honest I was waiting for more support from this forum.

Thanks.

TrDo.

I am sorry that your System Restore is still not working properly. I have obtained the official remedies for several System Restore problems from the Microsoft Team. Your particular error is mentioned with several possible remedies. Without system restore in working condition, you may want to make an image of your hard drive before you start.

The Storage Team at Microsoft - File Cabinet Blog : Common causes and solutions to Backup, System Restore, and Complete PC Backup problems - updated!

If you are interested, I will be glad to get you the link for free paragon back up software.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your reply. I had seen the old list by MS, where the 80070002 was not there.

In the updated list is there, but only as an error message forFile Back up. In any case the users rendered the solution suggested by MS as incomplete or not applicable.

I use from time to time, an Image Backup procedure with Seagate Disc Wizard. The last date that I did that was on 17/11/09. Usually, I do it once a month, but it looks like I have neglected it since November.

I will try to restore using this last image that I have got.

Before I try that, note that it's my first time to ever use image restore, currently I'm taking an Image of my pc, with Seagate Disc Wizard. So in case the restore back to 17/11 does not work, to revert to current state.

To be honest, If the restore back to 17/11 does not work (or even the RS problem does not go away), I think reverting back to today might not work either.

What a mess.

Thanks anyway for the Paragon link. I appreciate your help.

Do you think it's a long shot to revert back to 17/11 settings?

Thanks.

There is only one problem. Going back so far may change a lot that you have done since then; programs, settings, etc. Other than that it is worth a try. Make a back up of your hard drive first. It is my opinion that System Restore is an important feature of the operating system, it would be a shame not to have it available.

I agree that it's a very important feature. I have been using it for two years now.

I will revert back to the 17/11.

But before I do that, i will wait a little bit longer. Maybe someone will suggest something that will make the System restore work again.

Although, from my experience, usually when SR problems appear solution is highly unlikely to emerge.

Still, I will wait for a day or two, since in this forum people have come up with suggested solutions in the past.

Thanks a lot Richard.

Been doing some research, sometimes the problem is caused by the AntiVirus, turn yours off and test System Restore. Boot before you try SR.

Well, I was able to do SR from safe mode irrespectively of the AV. Always succeeded. Until today.

In the normal Vista enviroment, I was never able to SR successfully, for two years now. Always got the rejection message after the operation.

Even so, the rejection message I get now, is so different, even in it's appearence. It's a grey message with the red X on the left corner. It looks as though something else is on.

Thanks

TrDo.

This file does not exist in my Inf folder. Strange, isnt it?

P.S. The registry solution applies to file back up, not SR. I think.

Thanks a million Richard.
