HELP! While shutting down the computer, there was an option to install windows updates before shutting down and i clicked it. i switched off my monitor to let it install and shut down itself but my dad unplgged the monitor for some reason and i turned off the power accidently forgetting that the updates were being installed!

Now when i switch on the computer, it takes me to the startup options page and no matter which option i select, it ends up in a blue screen saying that a driver is attempting to write on a read-only memory. The updates may be installed incompletely so is there a way to delete the updates? HELP. :(

Hi MrAtiF and welcome to Vista Forums

The reason why you are having problems is because some updates overwrite and patch system files. When this happens, you need to take particular heed about the warning not to turn off your machine whilst the updates are configured/installed. Should power be removed, then some of these files will be incomplete and in an uncertain state.

Have a look at this Tutorial: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88009-advanced-boot-options.html

Try Last Known Good Configuration (advanced). If that doesn't work, try these options in order:

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/91467-startup-repair.html
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

If none of these work, or you can't even access them, then you might need to do a clean installation:

I made the same mistake once but it was fairly simple to fix. I started my computer in safe mode and did a system restore. Then I started it in normal mode. It then found the windows updates and I left it alone until they were installed. No more problems.
