in my vista computer i have two partitions main C and recovery D that came like this when i bought the computer from dell. I have 1 main partition thats 500gb and another thats 15gb that i believe is called the recovery drive. Do i really need them separate like this. Whats the point in having them separate when i can combine them and have 1 nice partition

The D drive is used in case of a problem. If you read your computer manual, there are certain keys that you press at boot, to bring the computer back to factory specs. If you have made backups of your hard drive, the recovery is not needed; EXCEPT, for in house warranty. The company may require that the computer have the original OS.

The recovery partition is your OEM Vista factory restore partition used to restore Vista on your C: partition back to factory defaults like the day you first turned it on. It has to be on a separate partition since it formats the partition that it installs Vista on.
I would recommend to leave it as is so that you can repair or restore Vista using the recovery partition.

There should be a program to make a backup disc set if you have a burner on the machine. Then you can delete and merge the partition if you want. I'd recommend using an image backup program with an external USB drive also though.

You can if you made a recovery disk set, or have a Windows install disc. It's a good idea to have a backup image if you can afford a USB drive since one little scratch and your restore DVD may not work or complete the restore successfully. You can get the image backup programs free. Get a USB docking station and you can buy cheap internal Sata drives and just slide them into the dock. Cheaper than buying external drives.
