    What were your Computing habits just prior to this? With out knowing more. Such as were there a lot of minor issues that led up to the big one? Or was it pretty quick? Either way I'm afraid it doesn't look good.

    I think your best bet at this point is do a clean install. Remember to install your File Backup Disks only from a known last good configuration. I know this is not what you want to hear, but you will save yourself a lot of time and frustration.

    You already know you will have to get a hard drive with it. What a lousy spot to be in. I wish you the best.

    How do you know the Hard drive is toast?

    Although, after being in the hands of a college student, it wouldn't be all that surprising a few drops were involved.

    As for the disk, it doesn't matter whether or not it's the original, as any copy of x32 HP will install - it's the key that counts.

    If the lapptop came with a OEM pre-installed copy, then you may have an issue when it comes time to re-activating. If that occurs, you can ring the nice robot woman at MS and follpow the prompts to re-activate.

    @Bneedshelp
    Use the 32bit home premium disc to do a Recovery of your laptop.
    1 Put the disc in and boot it via BIOS
    2 Before doing a clean install use the recovery option.

    Thank you all for your advice ..I will use it all... as for knowing the HD is toast it seems that way because it doesn't see the drive and I am unable to boot from it..but I still am having the problem with not being able to boot from disk... it starts to...gets to the Vista logo background and stops or goes black
