Vista - stalling on shutdown.

Sometimes but not always Vista on my computer stalls/hangs on shutdown with the little circle revolving.

I have checked for malware amd the computer appears to be clean.

Can anyone tell me what might cause this please?

I can give you the cause, the solution is a bit more difficult. Some process that you have used during the session is taking too long to shut down. When this happens, you may want to check the event viewer for errors. In addition. You may want to shut down from the desktop. Before each shut down you can go to task manager to see what is running, make a note of it. Eventually, you will see a pattern, it is always the same process that is running when you have the problem.

Hello magnum, welcome to Vista Forums!

Though Rich 46 has a good suggestion, we here at Vista Forums have an excellent tutorial on how to speed up the shutdown time for Vista, please feel free to have a look at it at the link below.

You may also have an issue with something that starts when the PC is booted up and is having a hard time closing, it may be something that you don't need running all the time any way so have a look at this tutorial to see if you can trim the startup file.
