Keyboard Error from Green Key Symbols

I have a problem with my keyboard. I will be working on it and just out of the blue when I select any key that also has a " Green Sign or Letter " on the actual key it will only allow me to enter that symbol that is shown in green. Example. on my ACER Laptop Model Aspire 5720Z I have on the number 2 key it has -- the number 2, the @ Sign in black colour, the (") Sign in Green Colour and the @ Sign again in Green. What happens is I go to select the @ Sign in Black and it Prints (") in Green and a line under it in Green but will not print the @ Sign at all in black. I have tried other keys that have the green letter or symbols etc. and it will only print the Green Symbol etc. not the symbol I am trying to type. The only way to get that symbol I want is to copy it from somewhere else on my page or to close down and restart my computer. This happens every time I am on my computer for more than 10 - 15 minutes. What can I do to stop this, I am stumped.

I think you've got a key labeled "Alt Gr" next to the space bar that's used to activate the green selections (e.g Hold Alt Gr & press 2 to get (*); if it's not Alt Gr, it's another one down there.

Sounds like whatever that key is, is jammed and you have to release it in some way.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for the quick reply. I to think it is something that triggers it but unable to determine what it was or how to fix it.

I have an ALT Car key but not an ALT Gr key and I will try it the next time it happens, since it always happens it won't be long I'm sure.

I will let you know if your reply solved it.

Thanks again,

Glen

Hi Ed again,

Sorry that I came back so fast but -- it did not work when I tried the Alt Car key and since I don't have and Alt Gr key I can't seem to cancel what triggers this to happen.

I tried the Alt Car key and many other keys with it but nothing changes.

But -- when I type in this location for the reply it doesn't give me the same problem. @ works Ok here but when I do it in Word, Excel or my ACT2010 programs it comes up " which is a green function on my key board on the number 2 key.

I tried for example to select the ? and here and now it is ok but in my ACT Program which I use the most it shows ".

I just wish I could turn off the Green Key Selection Function for good because I will never ever use it anyway.

Thanks for your help.

If you have any other suggestion I would love to hear from you.

Hi Glen,

I suspect it could be a driver problem. I assume Acer installs a proprietary driver rather than the standard Keyboard driver to handle the special keys.

Presumably, this started recently? Keys were working properly at some stage?

Try updating the driver in Device Manager, or, alternatively, rolling back to the previous version.

Ed,

Thanks for your help.

Because of you reference to looking for an ALT Gr key I have been playing around with the Alt Car key on my keyboard and have managed to get the problem solved each time it happens.

Buy that I mean once I get the Green Symbol error I can correct the selection error when it occurs by holding down the Alt Car key and pressing the Green key that caused the error and it displays the correct key I wanted.

It does not change or release it completely but it means I don't have to shut down and restart to remove the problem.

I am sure now I will find the second key to use with the Alt Car key to automatically cancel the error completely when it happens.

Thanks again for your help been like this for about two years now and finally I can get around it fast.
