Solved Disk Full, but should not be be

I'm new here, so I'll try not to screw up my post. I have Home Premium Vista, 64bit and 688GB hard drive(size when checking C: drive). I recently checked and it showed less than half full. Then a few days ago I tried saving a file and I got disk full message. I checked the c: drive again and it showed full- no space available, which should not be. I did a defrag, check disk and that did not work. I do remember seeing a warning around that time, but it vanished before I read it all. I think it said a file was not working or was corrupted and may have said something about "Catalyst". I found Catalyst Control Center on my computer, but that seems to be ATI card (graphics card?). I did delete a bunch of junk so it can now function, but latest check still shows only 72 MB available and that can't be.

Any solution? THANKS.

OK, I'll check that, but I should have at least 400GB of free space. I don't have a lot of stuff on my computer. That was why I thought it had to be some error within the system.

Try running TreeSize to see which folders are taking up space on that drive.

Thank you. TreeSize is a great program.

I ran it and it shows my c: drive size: 705,401MB, used 704,921- Free 479MB**
The TreeSize folder shows only 67,366MB or 10%, so there has to be something else going on. Thanks again.

With Vista it's best to have 2 partitions, 1 for Windows and Antivirus C: and 1 for everything else D:

I install all my games on my D: drive, so that Vista makes Huge restore points and even bigger Shadow Copies of only my OS and nothing else!

I agree; love TreeSize, but I'm confused by your post. Are you saying that TreeSize shows 704,921MB used but in the actual used folder breakdown it only shows 67,336MB?

Sorry, still confused. You said "I ran it and it shows my c: drive size: 705,401MB, used 704,921- Free 479MB**"

If "it" refers to TreeSize, where did it show this? If something else, what?

What does Windows Explorer show compared to TreeSize?

what defrag app did you use? you may want to try one that consolidates files and folders you may want to also try wiping free space, ccleaner can do this.
you may also want to run a full hd check as faulty clusters/sectors may be unable to hold data and marked as such but can be still read into total volume size.

You're right- my mistake. Explorer showed c: drive size: 705,401MB, used 704,921- Free 479MB**

The TreeSize folder shows C: only 67,366MB or 10%.

Thank you

My Computer

In Windows Explorer, right-click on each of the folders on the C: drive, click on Properties, and see if you can narrow down where the discrepancy is (after you check the individual files in the root directory).

It is still confusing to me what the problem is you're having, if any. If there is one hard disk with two partitions, C and D, then you may have one full and the other with more free space.

Using windows explorer to assess the disk usage is not as practical as the treesize app because in WE, there is no useful way to sort contents by folder size. You may have something taking up a lot of space buried way down in the folder structure that you could only manually identify by checking properties on each folder. With the treesize app, just sort by size at top (put units in GB), and you can very quickly see where the bulk of the disc is being used.

I have only a C: Drive. D: is my DVD tray. TREESIZE shows C: as full, but all files in the treesize folder add up to only 10%. I removed a lot of files to backup drive which gave me about 3GB of available space, but within 2 days, it now shows less than 1GB available. I plan to take it in under warranty. It has to be a corrupted system file or similar problem.

Thanks to ALL. I'll get back with the solution soon, I hope.

My Computer

I don't understand how you have a full C drive and then only 10% of it being used. TreeSize shows 100% of your drive allocation. Here is a pic of the contents on my C drive; the hdd is actually 250GB, but divided into two partitions of 111GB each (as C drive and D drive). The very top row of data in this view is the amount of disc used: 61.6GB. The folders directly below that show how the data on the drive is distributed.

Treesize_Cdrivecapture.jpg

Can you take a screen grab of your TreeSize view and post it?

You could try turning off your System Restore, restart your computer, and then turn System Restore back on.

That might fix your problem.
