Windows keeps freezing every few minutes

Hi

I have Lenovo U330, 4GB Ram, Dual Core Intel Processor, With windows vista 64bit.

A few days ago my computer went crazy. Every few minutes windows keeps freezing for a minute or two and than everything is back to normal for another 3-4 minutes.
I tried to recover my windows but it always tells me that there is an error.
I tried the tutorials about maximize my performance and I ran the disk error check and nothing came up.

I don't have windows vista installation CD/DVD as Lenovo don't give it to you.

Any help please before I'm formatting the computer and Install windows 7 :-)

Thanks for the replay.

I just tried everything you wrote and it still freezes. :-(

The HDD led is flashing all the time when It works fine and when windows freezes the HDD led stays on all the time.
I cancelled the indexing service but it still flashes all the time.

There is anyway maybe I can reinstall windows without formating? (Even if I don't have the installation CD/DVD).

If you have any ideas please let me know.

did you try to run sfc /scannow in the elevated command prompt in safe mode?

I ran it and after the test was finished it said that there was some errors but they could not be fixed and it saved a log file.

I managed to open the log file but I have no idea what to look for inside. Or maybe I'm not supposed to open it??? ;-)

forgive me if im wrong, this is my first time with cbslogs. and dont forget to create a system restore point just incase anything goes wrong.

the first entry that i saw that sfc found but couldnt repair, was recdisc.exe, it is used to create vista recovery discs.

i dont exactly know how to replace this, but i found something: i looked for my recdisc.exe and nothing happened (recdisc.exe was removed after the initial release of windows vista after the beta). i found a download link for recdisc.exe and i downloaded the file, and replace it and there you go, recdisc.exe worked. Heres the site that i found where you can get a copy of recdisc.exe and replace it: http://www.c4consulting.com.au/soluctions/vista/VISTA%20SOLUCTIONS.htm
but read this: since recdisc.exe was removed after the initial release of windows vista, this is leading me to think that this is just a false positive.

the next error which sfc couldnt repair, was the settings.ini of windows vista sidebar. we can ignore this one because of this article: The SFC.exe command reports Settings.ini file errors in the CBS.log file after you add gadgets to the Windows Vista Sidebar by using the Sysprep tool and an Autounattend.xml file

all of the other errors i found, were exact same, suggesting that you had ran sfc command multiple times.

i hope that this helps, and if it doesnt, we may have to look if its something with your hardware, and other problems with your OS.

and just in case, if you did replace the recdisc.exe thing we can create a repair disc and try to repair vista with that.

I did replaced my recdisk.exe. I followed one of the tutorials that explained how to do it. I ran the recdisk.exe and everything went well until the step you need to put the vista installation CD/DVD.
And Lenovo never provided this to me so I guess I need to ask them and 'richc46' said it might cost $25.

Maybe you have any idea what to do with that?

* Now actually I'm thinking to get Windows 7 from the store in my school. they having some special offers. :-)

well, that guide that i provided, my intention was for you to go up only to the step where you replace the recdisc.exe.

but i just thought up of it, but im only considering this as a last resort as third party drivers may be wiped out and most settings may be reset to default, and we can use the repair disc to repair your vista installation. heres the tutorial: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/141820-create-recovery-disc.html
use the first option, download an iso (using the bit torrent protocol) and burn it to the cd will give it the same effect as having the installation disc.

and another one: Repair Vista or Windows 7

my computer was just like yours (explorer.exe crashed all the time and i forgot how i fixed it)

give me some time to think and ill get back to you soon. but in the meantime:

oh and check the event viewer to see if anything came up.

run chkdsk although i doubt that itl help but worth giving a try

run memtest although i doubt that itl help

scan for viruses, use malwarebytes or a boot up scanner
