Solved Backup Failed error message 0X81000014

Hi i seem to be having a problem with with my Auto backup on my External E Drive .
I had to update my External Verbatim E drive as it was Full Disc.
I now use WD Elements but i reformatted it to use on my Backup an Restore Auto BU.
It backs up half my files then stops with this error message 0X81000014.
Which says i don't have enough E drive disk space.
Which is incorrect as i have 229 free of 298 GB on External E Drive.
Also i had this error code 0X8007005>> Denied Access which i fixed.
I tried several times same error message 0X81000014 pops up?

I have never had this problem before with Verbatim.
Any geeks know how i can fix this?.

Regards

Hi thanks for your help>>second error sorry i left a o out>>0X81000014

Thanks for the info i shall check it out.
The second error
0X81000014 is the one which says disc space not big enough to finish backup which is incorrect.
I found the error code here>>Common causes and solutions to Backup, System Restore, and Complete PC Backup problems - updated! - The Storage Team at Microsoft - File Cabinet Blog - Site Home - TechNet Blogs

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

File Backup

File Backup fails with the following error:

Access is denied. (0x80070005)

This error occurs because the recovery partition is enabled for File Backup or System Restore and is almost full. To work around this, do not select D:\ as a backup source. Also, go to System Protection in Control Panel and make sure that D:\ is not enabled for restore points.

File Backup

There is not enough disk space to save the back up files.

Free up disk space or change your back up settings
(0x81000005)

This error occurs when your backup destination disk runs out of space. You can delete a backup by following these steps:

  1. Open the location where the backup is saved.
For example, if you backed up your files to an external hard disk labeled "E," connect the external hard disk to your computer, and then open drive E.

  1. Right-click the folder containing the backup you want to delete, and then click Delete.
Notes

    • Backups are saved in this format: <backup location>\<computer name>\Backup Set <year-month-day> <time>. For example, if your computer name is Computer, your backup location is E, and you backed up on April 2, 2006 at 16:32:00, that backup would be located in E:\Computer\Backup Set 2006-02-04 163200. You would right-click the folder named Backup Set 2006-02-04 163200 to delete that backup.
    • When you make a full backup, a backup folder is created and labeled with the date for that day. As you add updates, that date stays the same, but your backup is not out of date. The next time you make a full backup, a new backup folder is created and labeled with the date for that day, and any updates are then added to that new folder. You should not delete the current backup folder.
    • You should always delete your backup at the backup set level, and not the individual incremental backups within the backup set.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is where i am confused as the error code for lack disc space on my PC 0X81000014 .
Denied access was this error code 0X8007005>>which i fixed by giving me administrator full privileges.

I still need to fix this error code 0X81000014>>for lack disc space on E Drive?

So why are the error code messages differant on my PC?

I went into System Protection but don't seem to be able to find that setting?
I will keep looking also i had a backup on F drive i wonder if that's causing the problem?
Maybe i need to delete both Backup disks an start again?
And just use E drive as documented in that error code
0x81000005?

I think my PC still thinks i am still using the old backup 150GB E Drive>>i still have that external E Drive which i changed to F Drive?>>but it was full so i bought a WD320GB E Drive which i want to use now>>which has heaps disc GB but gives me the error code 0X81000014>>lack disk space E Drive?
But on the E Drive on my Computer it shows this>>229GB Free Of 298GB
So can you see why i am so confused? i have lots to learn with computers.

I found this article, it makes since, this way you will know what file types are causing the error. I don't think Microsoft is still working on this with the release of windows 7.
There have been some suggestions to do a clean boot, starting your PC without all the non-windows apps running and then try backing up your PC. It's also been recommended that you turn off any antivirus programs. I have not experienced this particular error message myself, but it looks like you are not alone and there are a lot of people working on this one.

Hi. I have Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium and had much trouble with this error. I worked with a level 4 research technician for 3 days on this and gave him an idea. He developed a plan and I got this issue resolved. MS said they were doing an article on this, although I don't know when and how it will be available.

Now this is what I did to make a full backup. In my case there are file types or components and the we went doing the backup one component at a time. So when you go to the backup option you will see a list of file types or components. Now the first one is pictures. Select pictures and ONLY pictures and then select your C drive not the D partition. Now then at the bottom check create a full backup. Now just do that component your pictures. Repeat the process backing up one component at a time. A component or file type will trigger the error. For me it was videos. The files I have are .flv Flash Video and .mpeg4 Apple Quicktime and I-tunes. These files caused a conflict while backing up causing the error.

So if you have those files make a new folder on the drive you want to back up and on the folder of your FLV files on your hard drive right click and select copy. Then paste them into the backup drive folder. Same thing with MPEG4, these are flies I downloaded from YouTube in my case. So same thing copy and paste these files. With this technique you should be able to perform and obtain a full backup in Windows Vista using the backup utility. I hope this helps. I am not making this up.

Hi sure that makes sense doing what you say to find what files are causing this error code, i do have all those files you are talking about plus more, but the funny thing is that i have Vista Business which does Auto backup and with all those files you named never caused the backup ERROR before so i think it's something else causing the problem on my PC.

Have you checked to see if the destination drive letter is correct? Back up might be trying to place the files on your CD/DVD drive, or a drive that already contains data. Make sure you have some free space on the non-destination drives; the backup utility creates a “Volume snapshot” using free drive space on any available NTFS drive. What’s not backed up? The disk on which the files are stored must be formatted with NTFS; FAT32 disk don’t work with backup. Source: 2007 Windows Vista Inside and Out.

Hi thanks for your help i will check brink out.
Yes in the backup settings it goes to E drive.
I cannot read that image you sent properly.
I reformatted the new External backup Driver NTFS.

Format Settings.
Capacity 298GB
File System NTFS (Default)
Allocation Unit Size 8192Bytes
Volume Label 3_Tosh_WD_BU>>This is my backup in E Drive.
How do i check that this setting here in reformat goes to E DRive?

Now after i start the backup it it goes for a few hours then stops with this error message 0X81000014.

Not enough space on windows disk.

But on the Computer screen where the E Drive is it says>>229GB free of 298GB

I will give you a screen shot of my backup settings and error codes.
To give you a better idea at what is happening here.

Regards>>

Karlton,

The error mentioned 400MB free on the "Windows disk" which would be on your C: drive that Vista is installed on. There seems to be more to this error than this message says from what I see on the internet about it.

You might see if resetting backup will allow it to run for you afterwards.

Karlton,

The error mentioned 400MB free on the "Windows disk" which would be on your C: drive that Vista is installed on. There seems to be more to this error than this message says from what I see on the internet about it.

You might see if resetting backup will allow it to run for you afterwards.

Okay Shawn thanks.
Yes this is really bugging me as i have lots new stuff to backup.
I never had this problem before with my backup E Drive.

I will try resetting backup tomorrow i need to log off now.
I don't really like playing with registry edit as i am not really qualified PC Geek.

Thanks again for your help Karlton :geek:

Hi Shawn.
Before i do anything else if you have the time can you take a look at this screen shot where you can see the File System seems to be differant on the New E Drive 3_TOSH_WD_BU (File system NTFS) to the existing 2-TOSH-V-BU (File system Fat32)

On the format settings they are both formated NTFS?

Karlton,

The smaller "Format...." windows do not indicate what file system the disk has been format has. It only displays the file systems that you can select from to format the hard drive as instead when you click on the Start button.

The larger "Properties" window shows what the actual file system is of the drive instead. Your F: drive as FAT32, and E: drive as NTFS. If you would like, you can convert the FAT32 F: drive to be NTFS without losing any data on it.

You can only save a backup to a NTFS drive and not a FAT32 drive. However, you selected the E: drive (NTFS) to save the backup to, so this is not related to your backup issue.

Hi everyone.

I have finally FIXED the Error Code 0x81000014.
Finally i am at ease with this achievement with your help also thank you.

Okay what i done to fix this Error Code 0x81000014

After the first full backup failed with the error code 0x18000014.
The backup had copied 626 backup Zip files.
Before the error code 0x81000014 appeared.
I then right clicked the E Drive>properties>tools>error checking>this will check E Drive disk for errors on disk>>takes a long time 6 hours on my PC.
Also i setup the error check to fix files automatically.

Okay then i went to>start>the Backup Restore Center>backup new files on this computer.
Okay after a short time the Error Code 0x81000014 appeared again.

Okay this was so frustrating for me i done the same process as explained 4 times.
Then finally the backup finally completed successfully.
I now have my PC full backup on 705 saved Zip files on My New E Drive.
The next backup will only do new files added to my pc in the auto backup.

Okay now i have my PC set on Auto Backup so i wont really know until i do the next Auto backup on the 12/7/2010 if it will complete new backup Zip files successfully.

I have attached a screen shot of the items tools i used to do this i hope yous can follow my actions.

Regards :geek::geek::geek::geek:

Attached Screen Shot.
