Solved Start Search lists empty (dead) file links

Hi

I've not been able to find a solution for this problem through Googling related terms. Hopefully someone here can help.

The problem: I'm running Vista Home Premium and the Start Search reveals files which have long since been deleted. For example, if I type "s" it might show "song01.mp3". When I click "open file location" it takes me to the desktop where no such file is found. It seems pointless to list files which no longer even exist and yet I cannot find a way to refresh Start Search or delete the dead links. When I click try to delete the error comes up saying "Cannot find this item".

Is there a simple solution to this? Or any way at all to have Start Search only show files which exist and, as soon as a file is deleted, have it be removed from the search results?

The strange thing is that it seems to be only a few files which have been left behind as dead links. For example, I just downloaded a random picture from Google image search, then deleted it fully, and did a search for it. Nothing. As it should be. And yet, there are still dead file links which show up in search. Does anyone know why this is?

Apologies if this has been covered before. Thanks for any help.

Hello Emptylinks, and welcome to Vista Forums.

This sounds like your Index may not have fully updated itself yet. Normally the index only runs in the background during low usage or when the computer is running idle to update itself. You can rebuild the index to force it to update now. When it is finished rebuilding the index, test to see if you still have this issue of it finding deleted files when you search. They should be gone now.

Thanks for the reply. I just tried all three methods and neither resolved the problem - the dead links still show in start search. Any other ideas?

Ok, let's try disabling the index so that Vista will default to doing full non indexed searches all the time. This could cause large searches to take a tiny bit longer, but they will always be acurate and not give you search results with deleted files included.

Disabling the index solved the problem. Thank you!

However, I'm curious as to why those deleted file links still exist. Is there no way to actually get rid of them completely?

You're most welcome.

Rebuilding the index can take a bit to complete updating itself for changes made since the last time it updated. It may not have finished yet, so that could be why they were still showing up before.

Disabling the index has Vista to do searches in real time instead of just from the index.
