why I can no-longer download anything to D:

Hi,
For about a month now, I haven't been able to find the reason why I can no-longer download anything to D: (stick little programs there I rarely use) and, Reboot time.vsb (after many attempts at downloading a new) says: Windows can't find the device, path, or file. And that I may not have the appropriate permission to access the Item. I have administrator checked and Have never had this problem since I bought this computer 2yrs ago.

If you have any ideas, they would greatly be appreciated.

Todd

If you go to Computer and right click, click manage, expand storage on the left, do you see a D drive displayed in the middle plane.

Ilikefree,

Yes, after extending storage, it says: disk management. I click on this and C:, D:, Z:,(a partition I created awhile ago, and E:, CD-DVD area are all there in the middle. They all say healthy, they have free space, fault tolerance is NO in all of them and all have 0% overhead. I don't know if this helps but I try....

Thanks;

Todd

Ilikefree,

Afterwards, I thought I should probably add the status of the drives... D: (primary partition) Z: (logical drive) E: (primary partition) and C: (system, boot, page file, active, primary partition). All NTFS file system except E:.... that's CDFS.

OK in that expanded Storage view go to D, right click, properties, Under Volumes is there still free space not reserved.
Is it only with D you are having this problem?

Ok... Under properties, I am showing 23.4GB free space and 6.62GB used space. In permissions, I don't remember seeing this when I was here before. This is what I'm seeing... under group or users names: (new is) creator owner, which is highlighted. In permissions for that, only 1 check mark is there across from special permissions. There are 3 more under group or user names: System, Administrators(PAPAPC\Administrators), Users(PAPAPCUsers).
System has everything checked except Special Permissions, The same with: Administrators(PAPAPC\Administrators), and the last only has 3 check marks: Read, list folder content, and Read and execute.
To answer your other question, I have this problem no where else on any drives but, I have downloaded several times "bootspeed time" from this forum that used to work. It disappeared one day and now... when I click on it, I receive this message:Windows can't find the device, path, or file. And that I may not have the appropriate permission to access the Item. Go figure?

I forgot to mention... I tried booting in safe mode to see if I was still unable to use bootspeed time, I got the same message. I wanted to see if I could download something to D: but, was offline in that mode. Would safe mode with networking allow me to do this?

I think to see the permissions under the securities tab in properties in drive D makes me think this is a partition you have made, Is that correct?
I say this because I am unable to see any permissions only policies because my D drive is my DVD Burner.

Hi Heavymessing,

Hmmmm, That I haven't tried.... but if you are getting messages saying you don't have the administration rights to do this, and your set as the administrator.... I'd say we're both wondering "why." I used to be-able to do these things I'm talking about but now can't. I must of changed, or heaven forbid... deleted something. Maybe we might get the answer were looking for.... stay tuned

I don't think your problem is the same.
You are trying to move things to removable media but I think he has a partition D on his computer and E is his burner.

Im sorry... I never clicked edit to see permissions, now that I have, Created Owner has no permissions. I tried giving it to them but get an error saying some but not all were able to get the permissions, and I needed to have all... before it would allow me to finish.

I created the Z: drive partition and the rest were here. I tried to shorten my Z: drive and give back to C: about a month ago and Froze-up in the middle of it. I was able to get everything back but I just noticed that there is a unallocated space between the C: and Z and D drives.... Do they all have to be all together?

Sorry I am unable to answer that question about the spaces at this time, I will look into it.
You do need permissions though.
Adding Take ownership to the right click menu with the link I gave you will allow you to do this.
Just Right click and click take ownership.

Ok... the download worked, I have the take ownership in my context menu and have clicked on a few files to see. Now, I have tried from a few different places to take ownership of D: but the take ownership doesn't appear after right-clicking on the D: drive. Does this mean I already have ownership? If so... do you want me to follow the step-by-step procedures for assigning permissions? I wanted to make sure before I continued.

I am starting to get you two mixed up.
Are you the person with the partition D: on your hard drive?
Or the person trying to move something off your computer by using the D: CD ROM (DVD RW Drive D):) ?
