Vista problem

I run Vista x64. Since installing Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool (from a download), after a normal shutdown I am unable to get my computer up and running again. What happens is this: the windows logo appears as normal for a moment, then the desktop starts to appear and a few icons appear, then a "User Account Control" window opens showing the Kaspersky logo and saying: "A program needs your permission to continue", with the options "continue" or "cancel". However, by then everything has frozen on the desktop, including the mouse, and so I cannot click on this window to use its options and clear it. (My mouse works fine on another computer, and the other mouse freezes on mine and then works fine again on the other machine, so there is no problem with the mouse itself.) I have tried opening in "Safe" mode with command prompt in order to attempt to bypass this problem, thinking I might try a "system restore" via command prompt to take the system back before Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool was installed, but the "permission to continue" window STILL opens in the middle of the safe mode black screen and white computer code, stopping the keyboard from working to type anything into command prompt. I am a relative newbie to computers, and I am now baffled as to how to regain a working computer. Has anybody else had a similar problem, and can anyone offer me any suggestions on how to get out of this seeming deadlock? I am 80 years old and don't have much hair left to tear out! Any wisdom will be very gratefully received. (PS this posting was done on another computer.)

Hello karnaina, welcome to Vista Forums!

I'm not sure I can help but let's try a few things as it seems a virus may have taken control of the PC.

Do you have a Vista install disk, one that's used to install Vista with?

Hi, and many thanks for responding. Alas, I put my Vista install system disks in a "safe place", went through a couple of house moves and now I cannot find them for love nor money! I have been searching for them for 2 days now, to no avail. A simple 100% reboot from scratch is thus not a current option, I'm afraid, unless I go to the computer store and purchase Vista anew, which I am reluctant to do since funds are limited. I do have the use of my wife's computer (runs Windows XP) which is the one I am using to get onto this website forum. Not much help, I'm afraid. The problem seems to have started with downloading Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool, from the Kaspersky site; could there be a virus in this? Or could it be inadvertently having a similar affect to a virus? Perhaps the Kaspersky Company should be informed? It might save other people having the same problem...

Sometime when a virus is present it'll lock-up when an anti-virus becomes active.

Let me have a think and see if others have suggestions; be sure to keep checking back.

Would you be able to create the disk discussed in the tutorial at the link below though it's not an installer just a repair disk that may be useful?

Hi again. I feel a complete fool! I assumed I was running Vista in 64 bit, but I now realise I don't know whether it is 64 or 32 bit. I have just spent half an hour trawling the Windows Vista website to see if I could find a handy way of determining which of the 2 bit numbers I have, and it seems the only way is to click on "system" in the Start Menu. This is not terribly helpful if your system freezes before the Start Menu comes up, and if your mouse control freezes so that you can't click on anything! This was all in response to "How To Create A Vista Recovery Disk" which you kindly gave a link to. This seemed very promising, except that it warns that you have to know whether to download the 32 bit or 64 bit version. If I happen to choose the wrong version, will it damage my system further? If it is simply a case that the wrong recovery disk won't work on the wrong bit system and makes no changes and causes no system corruption or damage, then I could try downloading two disks, one for 32 bit and one for 64 bit, and see which one works? Or is this a very unwise idea?

If you can get into safe mode you could try a scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
You would only need the free version.

Sorry for the delay, it was night here in England; now 7.35 in the morning. I do have Malwarebytes Anti Malware free version on my wife's working computer, which is the one I am using here to do these postings. However, the affected computer won't start in Safe Mode because the same fault occurs, where the "a program needs your permission to continue" window STILL opens in the middle of the safe mode black screen and white computer wording (see my original posting), stopping the keyboard from working and freezing-up all Safe Mode options. I was unable, for instance, to use the Command Prompt option on Safe Mode to try to prompt a System Restore, as the keyboard itself did not respond and nothing could be typed into Command Prompt. If this is a virus, it's a ******* comprehensive one!

you are going to need the repair disc or a Ubuntu boot disc.

Hi Ilikefree. Thanks for your advice. Prompted by what you said, I checked out Ubuntu on the web, and apparently the disk that results from the download will not be able to boot-up my computer because the computer's booting system is fatally interfered with by the interruption of a non-repliable command sequence. I enquired further, and in layman's language it seems that during the opening stages of boot-up, the program has been altered (presumably by a virus) to demand a "proceed or cancel" input, which cannot be given because the same malicious code prevents mouse and keyboard systems from operating. However, your suggestion of a repair disk prompted me to get in touch with the company who supplied the actual desktop computer which had the Windows Vista software pre-installed. Since I have lost all the backup disks, this seemed my last chance! To my astonishment, the supplier told me that they had other reports of this problem recently, and they had developed their own repair disk which specifically tackles it (by adding a sort-of "tame virus" which creates a program bypass of the infected program lines). It seems the computer will then start up as normal, after which I click on the second part of the disk and wipe both the infecting virus AND the bypassing lines off the system completely. I am now simply awaiting their disk in the mail. You may be glad to know that it was your suggestion of a repair disk which began this path to a cure. Many thanks, and to Barefootkid as well.

Glad it seems you've found a solution to work towards; remember to post back in this same thread with an update.

Will do, if it works as they say it might. The firm also offers a call-out service, but it includes the technician's travel time and costs quite a lot (£100 per day plus extra for the travel time, which must be around $50 or more plus the extra?) while their disk is only £3 (maybe $1.50?), so - naturally - I am hoping the disk works! As they say, Watch This Space! (By the way, has anyone else experienced this same problem, I wonder?)
