What are the rumors? I heard that when you buy a computer, it comes with no system installed, you have to buy it. what gives? Any details

I've heard it was the other way... A full system had to come with a OS, but then again you can get Dells with Ubuntu preloaded on it.

But why would you expect to get a free OS?

Usually if you go to a computer retailer like Best Buy or whatever, you'd buy a computer and it would come with an OEM OS pre-installed all ready to go, like Windows 7. Plus bloatware they install along with it. If you buy parts and build your own computer, you'd buy a Retail Windows OS disk and install it yourself, of course. I guess it all depends on what rumors you've heard of.

Going back several years, there was some sort of story about Virtual OS. Microsoft was studying a method to have a virtual OS. The computer was a lot cheaper, because of no OS, but you had to pay MS per use. Bottom line, not good.

It goes like this "A friend purchased a computer (laptop), took it back because it was not as advertised, like he would need to buy programs thereby increasing the price almost double". Like this was something new from MS and all new computers will be sold this way from now on. If after 30 days, your system would not work without this "new whatever". More Later.

Okay, I have the story. It seems that from now on you will not have Office on new computers, you have to buy it. Sorry for all the confusion.

You've always had to buy Microsoft Office, although some computer manufacturers installed a cut down version or trial version onto their machines as a sweetener but it would be reflected in the price of the machine.

Office student version is like 120 bucks, I've only ever gotten a "trial" version of it with new laptops. I think this is MS second most sold program, so giving it away would be costly to them.

BTW, openoffice is a great alternative, and is free.
