ok, to cut a long story i have a hp media pavillion desktop with vista (not sure if 32 or 64) i got the an error message: disk boot failure, i was told that i would need a new hard drive, so i duly went a bought a new hard drive, used recovery disks, and all was going well, untill last disk, then i got an error message C:\Windows\system32\winload exe missing or corrupt. i assumed it was my recovery disks being faulty so i ordered new ones fromhp. anyway, now i cannot get startup repair to launch at all. it will boot from disk as in turn computer on, black screen with white bar getting longer saying windows is loading files, then straight to black scree with error messgage as above, telling me i may have installed new hardware, please insert disk and restart.

obviuosly i have installed new hardware (new hard drive) not sure what to do now, if i could acces system recovery great, but i cannot. by the way i am a complete novice.

appreciate all help.

If you installed a new Hard Drive, the OS has to be reinstalled. What type of DVD are you using? Is it a DVD that repairs the OS, such as startup repair or a DVD that will install the entire OS. A startup repair cannot repair something that is not there.

Hi, if you are using a new hard drive just as "richc46" said you can't use a recovery disk, as it doesnot contain the setup file to setup your windows but rather repair it.. so get a os windows cd, do a fresh reinstall of the windows and then go to the manufacturer of your laptop website to download the required drivers and install them.

cheers

Hi its the recovery discs i am using. the ones that let you reset to factory conditions. where can i get the os from without spending tons of money, and if so can i just upgrade to windows 7?

This is what I think. Those DVDs are very limited in its use. It is for just one computer to reinstall to factory specs in case of problems. They cannot be used on any other computer. I think what is happening here, the new HD is confusing the DVD into believing that this is not the same computer.
By the customary definition, it is the same computer unless you install a new MotherBoard, which you did not.
I am not there an can only guess, but I do believe this particular scenario might be the cause of your problem.
Without these safeguards, you can order a DVD pay much less than the market rate for an upgrade DVD, which is about $125 USD. There may be different explanations, but unless you can get your computer to work, you must consider my therory along with the others.
Additional therory, to upgrade you must have had a prior qualifying OS to upgrade from. The DVD must be able to recognize that OS. Usually just a Hard Drive does not prevent the user from Upgrading, but because of your particular problem, I have doubts.
I suggest that you call the computer manufacturer and get this sorted out. MS will not talk to you since the OS is what is called an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). I think that you will be able to reach a satisfactory agreement if you call the Company.
