Cannot start the laptop

Hi,

I have a HP laptop with Windows Vista.

Yesterday, I downloaded some windows updates, and also downloaded some registry cleaner from pc tools.

When I ran the registry cleaner, it said that some MC****.** file it was not able to update. (I put stars because I dont remember the exact name).

After that, I restarted the laptop.

But it only shows blank screen. It once said that interactive logon has failed and I should check the Event Viewer for logs. But I only saw the blank screen, nothing appeared after that.

Any idea, what shall be done. I need it urgently and cant afford to give it to service center now.

Atleast, is there any way to take the backup?

Thanks.

Hi khiladi,

Welcome to Vista Forums! I'll try to help you with your problem and others may also pitch in to help. I'm not quite sure what you mean by "is there any way to take the backup." Are you asking if there is any way to backup the data on the system, there's a chance (booting to a disk and 3rd party software or perhaps slaving the drive to another computer), but first let's see if we can simply solve the problem and then you can backup normally. If you mean you have a version of Vista that does a complete image backup and you have one, that's good but we're not at the point where doing that is necessary yet.

Do you know when this problem began (sounds like yesterday)? Try a System Restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem began (maybe 2-3 days ago or therabouts). Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html. Be sure to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for the updates. Use the recovery disk if the system prompt doesn’t work. The recovery disk works a bit different from the above procedures but if you follow the prompts from the System Restore menu option with the above information you should be able to restore with no problems.

If you don't have a disk, you can make a bootable Recovery Disk using http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/ along with burning software like: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/active-isoburner.html and, of course, a blank CD (perhaps made on a different computer or perhaps in safe mode with networking if that is working). To boot to the CD you may need to change the BIOS to make the CD-drive first in the boot sequence. To do that, wait for the screen that tells you the F key to push to access the boot menu or boot setup. Push it quickly. Make the changes, save your work, and exit. Put the CD in the drive and reboot. When prompted, push any key to boot from the CD.

Incidentally, I STRONGLY recommend you uinstall that Registry Cleaner using Revo Revo Uninstaller Freeware - free software download and software review - uninstall and clean-up utility from SnapFiles in Advanced mode - but be careful to only remove suggested entries that you can confirm relate to the installed application - if in doubt, leave it alone. Then toss it and never use it again on this or any other PC. Registry cleaners are not required with Vista, most do little if anything of use and many can cause serious harm to the system and the registry - even to the point where the only solution is a clean install (to say nothing of the fact that quite a few are merely fake and actually malware infecting your system when installed).

I hope this helps. Incidentally, please take the time to fully complete the section of your user profile on this forum concerning system specifications - and be sure to be more detailed than "windows vista" with all the entries - instead say "32-bit Vista Business SP2". This information helps us a great deal in researching problems you might be having. Check the system specifications at the bottom of my post for an example. Post back is this doesn't do the trick and we'll try some other options.

Good luck!

That's great to hear. It was my pleasure and I'm glad for any help I was able to offer.

I appreciate the feedback - it's good to know that the issue is resolved and you're back up and running again.

Don't forget to close out the thread by clicking the far right triangular icon at the top of your post and typing "solved" in the box and submitting it. The moderators will notice and put a green check next to the thread title. That way others seeking answers by searching the forums will know that this thread contains a solution to the issue identified in the title - and people seeking to help will not waste time checking out this thread since it has been resolved.

And welcome to Vista Forums! Now that you know where we are, bookmark the site and post anytime you have further questions or problems or if you just want to browse and learn (especially the Tutorial section offers some excellent advice on a wide variety of topics) or even if you want to try to help answer a question if you happen to see one where you know the answer and it hasn't already been posted. While it most likely won't be me the next time (though it might), there are many very skilled, experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly people here who, like me, volunteer their time to help others and one or maybe even several will respond to your post to assist you. While there are other forums on the web that do this sort of thing, you've now found what I think is the best (and I've posted in and/or checked out quite a few) so don't lose this link - you never know when it might come in handy again.

Good luck and best wishes.
