It maybe the simpleiest thing in the world but for me.. its getting complicated...

Is there anyway i can move files around to the order i want them in? Because im trying to change the order of the files in a percific folder but it wont let me.. not as easy as XP (Where you can just drag the file in between others to the order you want it in),there is some kind of lock system almost, only way i can change them around is the sort by name etc

Thanks in advance.

If you have your folders in documents. Click on a blank spot in documents and then sort by. What I do when the order that I want is:
My vacation and then your vacation
I call my vacation 1my vacation and 2 your vacation.

Hi hinigashi,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

Unfortunately, Vista doesn't allow you to save folder-specific custom sort orders. It's always going to revert to alphabetical (or whatever other column you choose to sort by). You can't just turn it off. It doesn't work like XP did. You can use tricks like Richard suggested as a workaround.

I hope this helps even if it isn't what you wanted to hear.

Good luck!

I dont understand by Vacation... Thanks for the help tho.

Im dislexsic so maybe my explination is not properly explained.
God this is hard lol.

Bascily im playing the new fallout, and i have made a few addons, But they need to be in certain order, for it to run properly. I dont want to use the "Sort by" because its useless for this.. i want to customize it myself, i want to change the order the files are at.

With windows XP, you use to be able to drag files around in the folder and choose the way the files where ordered.

Bottom line, put numbers before the title. Then sort by number.

Another option is to create a whole new category for the file - say Comments - and add that as a new column in that folder type. Then for each file and folder, type something in Comments that will get them all to sort the way you want and then sort by Comments. This is much harder and time-consuming than just adding numbers to the file and folder names, but if they are program files where you can't change the names that easily, this is an alternative.

I'm not suggesting this option - what Richard suggested is MUCH simpler if it can be done - but it is an alternative you can consider if required.

If this has resolved the problem, don't forget to close out the thread by clicking the far right triangular icon at the top of your post and typing "solved" in the box and submitting it. The moderators will notice and put a green check next to the thread title. That way others seeking answers by searching the forums will know that this thread contains a solution to the issue identified in the title - and people seeking to help will not waste time checking out this thread since it has been resolved.

And welcome to Vista Forums! Now that you know where we are, bookmark the site and post anytime you have further questions or problems or if you just want to browse and learn (especially the Tutorial section offers some excellent advice on a wide variety of topics) or even if you want to try to help answer a question if you happen to see one where you know the answer and it hasn't already been posted. While it most likely won't be us the next time (though it might), there are many very skilled, experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly people here who, like us, volunteer their time to help others and one or maybe even several will respond to your post to assist you. While there are other forums on the web that do this sort of thing, you've now found what I think is the best (and I've posted in and/or checked out quite a few) so don't lose this link - you never know when it might come in handy again.

Good luck and best wishes.

Check attributes, is it read only?
Right click and go to properties to check.

Right click on the file and click properties. Go to Details and hover your mouse over the Comments field and it should say "Add Comments." Type in whatever you choose. As I'm not 100% certain, do this on one or two and then check Explorer to see if they show in that column. I don't know how to do this for folders (I don't think they have that option).

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

i have tried what you said lorien but there is no comment section in details, and its not a read only, it can be modified etc.

I guess .esm files are limited to what you can do.

Not to worry. I shall find a problem which would help me change the order for fallout.
Thanks again!
