Can't delete desktop icon

I deleted a program, but its inoperable icon is still on my desktop. I cannot get rid of it. I right click on the icon and hit "delete" but it will not go away. Its respective program is gone off my hard drive. I have tried all the resources I can think of to get rid of this bothersome icon but to no avail. HELP!!! Thank you.

hi download revo uninstallater http://download.cnet.com/Revo-Uninstaller/3000-2096_4-10687648.html and uninstall the program using this.
If you can't see the program on the list, you can either reinstall the program then uninstall it using revo or if you know a bit about registery, go local machine , under software and delete the string for that software if there is any. then delete the icon.. should work!!

The advice from Ashvin should work, but in the event it does not this will occupy most of your day
