So I have this issue that is driving me insane.

I am using the TSST corp CDDVDW TS-L632H ATA Device to transfer my data onto blank dvd's.

The problem is it stopped working.

I receive the error message.

"Windows was unable to complete the format."

I have tried setting the pc back to its original state but this has not worked for me.

Help

Although not precisely the same model (D vs. H), the following thread discusses essentially the same problem, so possibly the recommended solutions will work for you: http://www.vistax64.com/drivers/255797-tsstcorp-cd-dvdw-ts-l632d-ata-device.html.

You may be having troubles with your device drivers, firmware, and/or software. Go to Device Manager by going to start / search box and type device manager and enter and then double-click on the program icon that appears. Check each device for a red x, yellow ! or white ?. These identify devices with problems (probably drivers, but also conflicts or something else). Click on each for further details and troubleshooting tips. If you need to get drivers, firmware, and/or software (and you should get whatever applies to this device and any others you have time to do - they may help in ways beyond just resolving this problem), do so from the computer vendor or device manufacturer (NOT from Microsoft Updates). Proceed as follows to get the drivers: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/driverssupport/ht/driverdlmfgr.htm. Once you have the drivers, you can install them through Device Manager as follows: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/193584-device-manager-install-driver.html.

If that doesn't work, then please post any error messages from the Event Viewer concerning the drive (Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Event Viewer). Here's how to use Event Viewer: http://www.petri.co.il/vista-event-viewer.htm. Look in the System section.

If that doesn't work, try a clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135. If the problem goes away then it's just a matter of tracking down the culprit causing the problem. Follow the procedures in the article. Once found, delete, remove, deactivate, or uninstall it. Once done be sure to reset Vista back to normal status as explained in the procedures. If the problem occurs in clean mode then just restore the system to normal status and reboot - this solution is not going to work.

I hope this helps. If not, please post back with whatever additional information you can provide that might help us identify the cause.

Good luck!

59 views and 1 reply. Means that you have a unique problem.
I have read your post and the reply. Clean boot was suggested and I will assume that it was tried and did not work. See if you can get success in safe mode. Although, I am not even certain that the software will function in safe mode, lets find out. The basic difference between safe mode and clean boot is drivers. Lets see if this may be a driver issue.
Wish you luck.

Additionally check this one:

Navigate to HKEY_LOCALE_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CdRom and make sure the phrase Autorun is set to 1 ,if not then fix it +restart.

Make also sure Shell Hardware Detection service is started and set to AUTO

I have been trying to comprehend why my TS-L632H ATA device has failed.

I have completed a System Restore using Toshiba's Recovery Disc in an attempt to fix this.

It will read dvd's and cd's properly but will not burn data with ANY program.

When i insert a blank disc i get the message "Windows was unable to complete format ."

I have Uninstalled the Device and let windows reinstall it.

NO LUCK!

As you can see i have tried changing my driver letters.

I am clueless on how to go about fixing this.

Whatever disks you are using, try something different (if DVD, try a CD or even a different type of DVD (DVD-R vs. DVD-RW) or perhaps a different brand). I've seen cases where a feature on a Drive stops for certain media but continues to work with other types or where certain brands of media simply will not work right with certain Drives.

If you've updated the drivers (not just confirmed they are current and functioning in Device Manager but downloaded and updated them) and tried this in clean boot and still have the problem (and don't want to try Flavius' suggestions even though I suspect if those entries were wrong you'd be having more trouble with the drive than just the inability to format but it is possible), and tried what I just suggested above, then we can try the following few additional troubleshooting options (possibilities - but no guarantees and frankly, not very likely).

Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / Command prompt and right click on command prompt and click run as Administrator.

Type sfc /scannow and enter and let it run. It will scan and try to fix some of your system files. Hopefully it will complete with no corruption it could not repair (if there is such corruption post back here or try to analyze it to find the problem file(s) using http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228. Try to attach the report (you may need to copy it to your desktop before it will permit you to attach it) here so we can see if they can be repaired with good copies from the installation disk (unless there are too many).

While in Command Prompt, type chkdsk /f /r and enter and let it run. It will want to schedule itself to run at the next restart. Answer yes and then reboot to run the program. It will scan and try to fix any corruption or bad sectors on your hard drive and mostly remove that as a potential cause.

If that doesn't work, then please post any error messages from the Event Viewer concerning the DVD drive (Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Event Viewer). Here's how to use Event Viewer: http://www.petri.co.il/vista-event-viewer.htm. Look in the System section.

Run a System Health Report -
START | type perfmon /report - a viewer will appear | Save as an HTML file (default file extension). Then zip the file and attach it to your next reply.

If you have another computer and can swap drives and see if the problem remains on the computer or moves with the drive, that would be very useful information.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

P.S. If nothing suggested by anyone who has replied helps identify or resolve the problem, then it's possible that the drive itself may need to be serviced or replaced (even if I find that hard to believe given the type of problem you are having) - but we're not at that point yet, so don't jump the gun.

Re: Vista:Windows was unable to complete the format...enlighten me.

Hi,

There might be a compatability issue & firmware upgrade needed.

What is the current firmware version of your unit?
What make/ type of CD or DVD are you trying to format?

Please let us know & I will try to help further.

It's an odd little solution but if it works, it works! It does not make much sense to me, but I guess that people are starting to write drivers using the .net Framework (<-- bit odd) now!
