Solved Shortcuts not working

Hi, just wondering if anyone can help.

All of a sudden none of my shortcuts on my desktop are working or through the start menu. the only way I can access is my programs is to open up past documents so the programme is obviously still on my machine.

Does anyone know why this might be and what I can do to resolve it?

Many thanks

Hello Mike, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might see if downloading and merging the lnk (LNK) option in the tutorial below may be able to help. It will restore the default associations for lnk (shortcut) files.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/233243-default-file-type-associations-restore.html

In addition, you should run a thorough antivirus and malware scan to help be safe incase they caused this.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

EDIT:
LOL, Rich beat be me to it. ;)

Hi Richard

I have tried this but they are still not working. I have run the file and rebooted my computer but no change. everytime I click on a short cut from the desktop or within the start menu, it just comes up with the 'choose the program you want to open this file with' box.

any other ideas?

thanks

Mike

Thanks Richard,

I am downloading the malware software and the antivirus has come back negative.

I will update in due course.

Thanks for your help

Mike

My Computer

Just to be sure a full scan on malware and antivirus should take at least 45-60 minutes. Mine takes 90 minutes.
Just want to be sure its the full scan.

Richard you are a genius!

I installed the malware software you reccomended and run a full scan. It found 5 infected files. I removed these and now we are back working again!

Thanks so much for your help

Mike

My Computer

Thats great Mike
I really am glad that it worked out
I always try to think of the cause of the unexpected, rather than just a cure.
It had to be something like malware or virus that caused your problem. I realized that there was a problem when Brinks thread did not help. Those tuts are great and usually work.
Take care buddy.
