cannot add new folder to desktop

Didn't know where to post this, so I' starting in general.
I recently found I can no longer create a "new folder" on the desktop, when I try I get the following - "Error 0x801F00004 Disallow the Fast IO path for this operation"
Can anyone please help?

didn't see any others - should I continue with the other scans or try a restore?

Welcome Bret
If sfc finds errors that are not corrected, run several more times.
If they are not corrected at that point, I would suggest that you turn off the side bar (gadgets). Most errors indicate problems with the sidebar. I do not think this will solve the original problem, but lets not guess

Those particular SFC errors with sidebar.ini are common and not really errors and can be ignored. I do not believe they are involved in the problem; however, it can't hurt to follow Richard's advice and turn off the sidebar to see if that helps (though I sincerely doubt it).

Did you click on the Folders link in Brink's post and try those procedures? It might have been hard to notice that was a link with a procedure - perhaps the most likely to resolve the problem. You should do that before a System Restore. If you did and it didn't work, then move on to the System Restore.

Thanks to every body for the help! for this ridiculous little problem.
How can something so simple be so complicated?

OK, what I'm hearing is re-run the sfc/scannow a few more times, then run the scf/varifyonly, then sfc /scanfile=(full path of file), then sfc /verifyfile=(full path of file) then sfc /? before trying system restore, is this correct?

After ALL the scans are complete, and after the sfc/? scan, doyou guy's want a look at any of this information?

I havn't ever completed ALL the scans yet, just the sfc/scannow twice and a sfc/? to supply the previous information.

Did you also try the System Restore as suggested by Brink?

Thats fine
Try the sfc /scannow
UP to 3 times if errors are found and not repaired.

If errors other than sidebar are shown you can post them here
If minor, we have people who can help
If substantial a repair install may be needed, if you can get your hands on an install DVD.

I believe that you mentioned that the reg fix did not work.

richc46, yes I tried the regestry fix first and that didn't seem to work. Then ran the sfc/scannow twice and found only the "side bar" issues, but I never had a chance to run the other scans listed such as the sfc /scanfile=(full path of file), then sfc /verifyfile=(full path of file) then sfc /?

This is a gateway pc and the recovery media is located on a partition of the HD, so I don't have a media disc available.

Very long shot, but you can disable the gadgets (sidebar) as I suggested, just as a test.

Ok I'm back at this, at step C) sfc /scanfile=(full path of file) - Scans the integrity of the chosen system file and repairs it if needed.
and I feel really stupid, but... the example shows sfc /scanfile=C:\Windows\System32\kernel32.dll
Since I'm running a 64bit system, do I type this command as listed? or should I use "System64" instead?

The only thing suggested here was sfc /scannow

Thanks Richard, I disabled the sidebar per instructions - i.e. reg tool
and reran sfc/scannow a couple of times, with no results.
I guess all that's left is a system restore? is that how you see it?

I did not have high hopes about the sidebar. Even with corruption it usually just creates problems with gadgets.
I think that system restore is best.
