Command prompt

About a week or so ago my computer started this annoying little thing with its command prompt. If two or more users are logged on (using or not) the CP will pop up every few seconds really fast, but does not stay up long enough to read.

So, I did several scans and registry cleanings. But the problem was not solved. Then I went back to when the computer was not doing this and still didn't solve it. So I figured maybe one of the user accounts were bad and still it did not solve the issue. The only way I've figured out how to get rid of this issue -temporarily- is by restarting the system.

The system runs fine like nothing is wrong minus the annoying pop ups.

Ideas?

I'm not certain you're seeing the Command Prompt as much as it might be some type of error message (or maybe it is CP and some program is attempting to run or actually running). if the above doesn't resolve the problem, then try the following:

Do you know when this problem began (it seems like only a week or two ago)? Try a System Restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem began. Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html. Be sure to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for the updates.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Uh, yeah. It definitely is the command prompt window and I attempted a system restore to fix the issue as soon as it started .... and here we are it's still going.

I mean it's not a computer crippling issue, but having to reboot every time a new user logs on is annoying.

Hi Vistacrazy,

I was beginning to think the problem was resolved, but alas here we are again.

Try a clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135. If the problem goes away then it's just a matter of tracking down the culprit causing the problem. Follow the procedures in the article. Once found, delete, remove, deactivate, or uninstall it. Once done be sure to reset Vista back to normal status as explained in the procedures. If the problem occurs in clean mode then just restore the system to normal status and reboot - this solution is not going to work.

I also recommend you download, install, and run Autoruns Autoruns for Windows and click on the Everything Tab and see if anything is running at startup that has to do with user logins or user accounts. Click on File and Save and name it anything you want but save it as an Autoruns file. Then zip the file and attach the zipped file/folder to your next post so we can review it.

I recommend you download Process Monitor Process Monitor and set it up to scan and then do whatever causes the screen to appear. After rebooting, open Process monitor and stop the scanning and then click on File and Save. Choose All Events and Process Monitor file and save it to the desktop. Then zip the file attach the zipped file/folder to your next post so we can review it. If it works as I hope, it will tell us precisely what process was running when that screen opened and that should help lead us to a cause.

If that doesn't work, then please post any error messages from the Event Viewer concerning user login or logoff or startup or lockup (Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Event Viewer). Here's how to use Event Viewer: http://www.petri.co.il/vista-event-viewer.htm. Look in the System section. To collect what we need, double click on the message and click on the Details tab and copy everything there. If there are several, you may way to paste them to a Notepad .txt document so they'll all be in one place. Then attach it to your next post.

While these will not resolve the problem directly, we need to know what is happening first, and we hope these procedures, reports, and files will help us determine that. Once we know what is running, we have an excellent chance of stopping it and hopefully THAT will resolve the problem.

I hope this helps.

Thanks and good luck!

Everyone with a problem does not necessarily have a virus, but its a good place to start with the unexpected. If positive remove the virus if negative, follow Lorien.
Run a full updated virus scan
Download and run a full malwarebytes scan. Update it first.
