monitor goes into sleep mode right away when comp on and will not awake

the problem im having is the monitor goes into sleep mode right away when comp is turned on and it wont come on no matter what i do it just keeps saying monitor going into sleep mode so i cant even get on the comp to change settings or begin to fix the problem i have an HP desktop any ideas anyone...

Try booting into Safe Mode and see if the problem occurs there as well. If not, you should be able to make the necessary changes in Start / Control Panel / Power Management to revise when the monitor goes to sleep.

Do you have another user account on the system? Try logging into that and see if the same problem occurs? If not, then we may be able to change the power settings with this other account (but we will need to do so for the account with the problem). But before going there, let's see if this even works.

If that doesn't work, do you know when this problem began? Try a System Restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem began. Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html. Be sure to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for the updates. Use the recovery disk if the system prompt doesn’t work. The recovery disk works a bit different from the above procedures but if you follow the prompts from the System Restore menu option with the above information you should be able to restore with no problems.

If you don't have a disk, you can make a bootable Recovery Disk using http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/ along with burning software like: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/active-isoburner.html and, of course, a blank CD (perhaps made on a different computer or perhaps in safe mode with networking if that is working). To boot to the CD you may need to change the BIOS to make the CD-drive first in the boot sequence. To do that, wait for the screen that tells you the F key to push to access the boot menu or boot setup. Push it quickly. Make the changes, save your work, and exit. Put the CD in the drive and reboot. When prompted, push any key to boot from the CD. Then go to the menu to find System Restore and follow the prompts and the procedures.

the thing is i cant get my monitor to come on at all before it comes on it goes right to saying monitor going to sleep... im on my work comp now so i cant go on my comp to change any settings cause the screen doesnt come on

Force thePC to shut down by holding the on/off button in, and then reboot.

Try just once, not for continual use.

See if you can get it into safe mode. During boot tap f8 continually.

If you examine the very first post from me here to you, I recommended trying safe mode, a different account, and using a disk. All three of these things occur before sleep mode is activated. While I can understand if safe mode and a different account still don't work, using the disk should work because it does not access the system to even be aware of sleep mode settings. Sleep mode settings will have nothing whatsoever to do with using the disk. If this problem occurs when using the disk, then the problem is not sleep mode but something else.

In that case, please boot into BIOS (again, this occurs before sleep mode happens) and check the settings there to see if there are any relating to the monitor and its activation or use of sleep mode - if so, make appropriate adjustments to disable sleep mode (but I doubt there's anything there as I've never seen such BIOS settings, but it's worth checking).

You say the monitor says it is going into sleep mode - please provide the exact word-for-word message and how long it stays on the screen.

Please check these things (and of course try them first) and report back.
