How do i move multiple files from window search to someplace else? When i make a search for lets say music files "wma. Search displays all wma files however when i try to highlight more then one file to be able to move a entire block of wma files. Vista instantly opens that file with my music player even know i do not want to play it i just want to highlight it to move a bunch of files at once . I have mixed music files in different folders and every now and then i find odd files like wma and convert then to mp3, i have bin able to in the past move a entire block of files from my search results but now of a sudden this is no longer possible , any advice would be very appreciated . Oh by the way the same thing happens with other files too (text) it only lets me highlight and cut and paste one file at a time . As soon as i left click a file the file opens instead of highlighting so i can not press ctrl or shift to highlight some more files because the window has already opened the first clicked on file and closed all the search results . Yes i could do one file at a time but it would take forever because id have to do the search and move one file then do the search again and move one file so on so on.

Hi hammerman,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

Go to Start / Control Panel / Folder Options / General and check the bottom section. I'll bet it's set to open files with a single click. Change it to double-click. Now when you click on a file you'll be able to select multiple files as the single click will just select the file and not open it.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Ok i checked the settings in my control panel and it was set as it is supposed to be, one click to select double click to open, just as you said it should be. I did not mention before that on the desktop or anywhere else in my computer everything works as supposed to if i left click a file it highlights it and then if i want to move it i have to right click and select what i want to do . The problem of the files opening on the first left click is only happening in the search window when i use the vista search. I even downloaded and installed google desktop search to try to get around this problem and it even does it using google desktop search, as soon as i left click on a file that google search found instead of it highlighting it actually opens. As i said using my files in the rest of my computer all is as it is supposed to be. Left clicking highlights only it does not open a file. I have moved multiple files from windows search before its bin a wile but i remember doing it something is amiss i think.

Hi,

First, if you have single click activated do this: -

Try this: -

After you have searched for the files & you can see the results, when the mouse "hovers" over a file name it will select that item. To select one more item press Ctrl and move the mouse to the nextfile name. Add further files in the same way.

If you want to select a "bunch of files" in a consecutive sequence, select the first file, then press shift & then move the mouse to the last file in that sequence. This will select all files between the first file & last one.

If you have double click activated: -

Carry out the above procedure in the same way but instead of "Hovering the mouse" you will need to click the mouse to select the file name.

Multiple files are selected in the same way with Ctrl & shift.

Please note: -

If you start moving files around the system could get confused as certain files are expected to be in certain places. Also media playing software, photo packages & office packages will also expect the same file to be where it last saved it.

So, if you move a movie or a document etc. the media player file location & file storage data
(Media library) will be wrong & therefore this could give problems when you try to play a music file or film etc. & that is because you have moved the file to a new location which is different to the one in it's library.

I hope this is clear enough foryou to follow.

Hi hammerman,

Try creating or using a different user account and see if it has the same problem. There may be some corruption in your user profile and this will help determine if that's the case. You may need to do a few searches first if none were done using that account before.

Let us know how this turns out.

Good luck!

Ok i created a new user account and using the search feature has the same result and problem as i have described above. It does not let me highlight and move (Cut and paste) more then one file at a time that came up in the search results Question "i don't know anyone with Vista . Can someone using vista cut and paste more then one file at a time in the search results. Example of what i have done before is do a search for any wma music files that are randomly scattered thorough my mostly mp3 music. then i cut and paste the results to a new folder where it is easy for me to convert them to mp3 . This is now impossible because i can only move one file at a time from the search results after right clicking and cut and paste all the other search results close and to move another file i have to type in wma right click pick a file move it and then do the same thing over and over witch takes more patience then i have . I used to have XP and i am sure i was able to cut and past multiple files from my search results . Has this bin made impossible in vista or not . ?

My Computer

Notice the screenshot below where I have selected a group of files which I can now copy or cut or move or delete as I wish in the Search folder just as I can in any other folder. And I'm using 32-bit Vista Business SP2. So it is possible (and I tried it before my first post but just didn't mention it because I thought it was a single-click issue).
