two boot system - how to delete old one !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a failure of some sort that caused the system to fail to reboot. I booted the system from the Vista CD and performed a repair. Now, I am prompted to choose the Operating System in the in the Boot Manager. I now have 2 files, Windows Vista Home and Windows Vista (tm) Home Premium (recovered). If I choose the NON-recovered file the machine will not boot. If I choose the (recovered) file the machine boots and operates fine. I went to System maintenance and changed the default boot system to the (recovered) file. Now, when I reboot it still goes to the Boot Manager screen and waits a while before it finally boots to the (recovered) file.

I would like to repair this machine to the way it used to work and not have the machine go thru the boot manager screen. How can I remove the defective one that is the previous safely and return system to normal state with recovered one?

Hi try this:
1. Boot into a working operating system.
2. On search bar type 'msconfig' and run as admin
3. From window appearing select 'boot' tab. Your two bootup os are listed.
4. Select the other OS to be removed and click on delete and restart your system

My Computer

I dont think that an update could cause the problem. It might make the problem known.
Download and run windirstat, lets see what on that drive, now.
WinDirStat - Windows Directory Statistics

If you only have one drive or several that can be explained. Download a few updates at at time. Before each time you update make a system restore point. Then test the update, of no problem, add a few more after another restore point.
If the update is a problem, remove the update with the System restore and slowly install the others using the same method.

Thank u Rich...
Safari and jet audio and windows update - these three only I had installed it before...
As you know there were more than 100 updates, It is techniqually bit difficult to begin installing one by one...on the top of that i am so scared to install update, thinking that at least now without any update and any program installed, i can boot the system perfectly well, but don't know for sure...what is the cause of reboot failure.
But safari or jet audio could be other possibilty for reboot failure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!BUT STILL don;t know..
any way I am going to start Downloading and running windirstat....

My Computer

If you can, download at least the SPs. You should be SP2

One thing at a time. Look at windirstat. Do you recognize all the drives. Are they suppose to be there?
Do you understand basically, what is on each drive?

Hi Rich..
Yes computer is working is working perfectly...but without installing any program and any updates..
sooner or later i need to update or install other program...right?
but installing update or or other programs distroy the booting system...
still i m confused what is the program that is destroying my system...
I need yr suggestion....

My Computer

If you have a little patience, you are in good shape. Install slowly one or two at at time, then test. If all works well, try the next.
If the problem happened suddenly, its probably an update or a program that you installed about the time the problem began. Install the SPs first. SP1 and then test, if ok, install SP2. If ok just install the updates that were issued a month before the isssue of SP2 and later. The others are included in the SPs. Do it slowly, one or two at at time and test. Thats all tha you can do.
It is not as bad as it seems. Before you begin to use the computer install a few. When done a few more. It will get done.
To refine the method a bit. The problem SP is the one that was issued about the time that the problem began.
