Vista Home Premium x64 blank screen w/mouse icon

My computer has been crashed for about 2 weeks or more, but the toshiba splash screen comes and says press f2 and f12, then it loads the microsoft splash then it looks like the screen goes off for a split second then comes back on and the mouse icon comes up then blank screen nothing loads, just the mouse icon is up and working, i restart it, then the safe mode screen comes up then i try to load up safe mode and that doesn't come up either, and i've tried startup repair to command prompts and nothing works so far, and its a toshiba satellite a505-s6569 and when i use startup repair the problem event is startuprepairV2 with external media and one of the signatures says noOsinstalled, and i've tried bootrec.exe as well and still nothing.

Any Help, thanks in advance.

Hello if your computer comes on at all have you tried to run from an elevated command prompt sfc /scannow just the way you see it this can fix a lot of error's for you. If you have already run it what does the sfc /scannow report say.

Welcome to Vista Forums!

Since you can't seem to boot into normal or safe modes, we'll need to use disks to gain access to the system and run some tests and recovery procedures and possibly even solve the problem in the process.

Do you know when this problem began? Try a System Restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem began. Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html. Be sure to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for the updates. Use the recovery disk if the system prompt doesn’t work. The recovery disk works a bit different from the above procedures but if you follow the prompts from the System Restore menu option with the above information you should be able to restore with no problems.

If the System Restore doesn't work, do a Startup Repair by booting to the genuine Windows Vista Installation Disk (or one you can borrow from ANYONE) or from a Recovery Disk with recovery options included on it. Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/91467-startup-repair.html. To boot to the CD you may need to change the BIOS to make the CD-drive first in the boot sequence. To do that, wait for the screen that tells you the F key to push to access the boot menu or boot setup. Push it quickly. Make the changes, save your work, and exit. Put the CD in the drive and reboot. When prompted, push any key to boot from the CD.

If you don't have either disk, you can make a bootable Recovery Disk using
http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/ along with burning software like: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/active-isoburner.html and, of course, a blank CD (perhaps made on a different computer).

If that doesn't work, go to the command prompt on the disk. Then let's check some of your system files:

If using the disk, cd to C:\Windows\System32. Type sfc /scannow and enter and let it run. It will scan and try to fix some of your system files. Hopefully it will complete with no corruption it could not repair (if there is such corruption post back here or try to analyze it to find the problem file(s) using
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228. Try to attach the report (you may need to copy it to your a flash drive before it will permit you to attach it and then transfer it to a functioning computer) here so we can see if they can be repaired with good copies from the installation disk or other system files (unless there are too many). If you can't copy the report, then see if you can at least copy the error mesages from the report and paste them to your next reply.

While in Command Prompt, type chkdsk /f /r and enter and let it run. It will want to schedule itself to run at the next restart. Answer yes and then reboot to run the program. It will scan and try to fix any corruption or bad sectors on your hard drive and mostly remove that as a potential cause.

If you've already tried bootrec.exe and can't connect to the hard drive to even repair the boot files (or can but it doesn't help), then there may be a connection problem with the memory or the hard drive. Please open the computer and remove and reset the memory chips as well as the hard drive cables (on both ends if possible - just the hard drive if it's a laptop).

If none of the above work at all (no access or no response or error messages like no OS installed), then let's test some of the hardware for problems.

Let's see if we can test your memory and your hard drive and potentially eliminate them as the cause. You will again need to make bootable disks (since I'm assuming that's the only way to access your system at the moment).

To test your hard drive, try HD Diagnostic (http://www.carrona.org/hddiag.html) or this test: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp (http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287). If it fails the tests, replace it. If it passes the tests, then there's probably nothing wrong with it.

You can also test your RAM at
http://www.memtest.org/. Here are additional instructions that may help: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html. If it fails, test each chip individually to find those that are bad and replace them. If it passes, RAM is probably OK.

I hope this helps - or at least helps us identify the problem. If not, post back with results and as much information as you can provide about how things went and we'll see if that helps us decide what the next logical step to diagnose and/or repair the problem.

I don't know if i should open my laptop up because i still have the warranty on and the reason why i don't take it in is because there most likely going to send it away or do a whole PC restore on it and won't tell us, or something like that, unless it comes to that i'll do the PC restore myself and it has no system restore point either, and i've already done a chkdsk prompt, but i'll try everything that i didn't do that you have up.

So i figured out the problem with my laptop, windows was just deleted but i still had all the old files and i just loaded windows vista x64 back in and is working fine, until now, the power comes on but the monitor doesn't and it sounds like everything is working cuz i hear the disc drive make that sound when loading up but the monitor won't light up
