hi,

my samsung laptop came with windows vista service pack 2 pre-installed 2 years ago i think. about a month ago my hardrive broke and i had to get a new one. ever since then windows will not accept my windows product id. the windows sticker on my laptop is completely worn out but the product id was extracted from my old disk. but when windows activation comes up it wont accept my id, saying it cant validate it. any idea where i can get a new product id from.

If Vista came preinstalled with your computer, the Key is the number on the computer. If you received a DVD with the computer, the numbers are probably not the same and that is why you cannot validate. What you need to to is activate by phone. Explain your situation and have all available information ready. There should not be a problem

When you install and you are asked for your key, do not give it and untick the box that says activate as soon as I am online.
Dont worry, it will work out.
You have 30 days to activate from that date.

Vista and Seven are activated in the same manner.

Hi
Follow what Rich has said and you'll be on safe side. If your laptop came pre-installed with that os and you have both disks (restore plus & OS Dvd), tha key is on that sticker.
Since you are working on a new hard drive that key wont be validated bearing in mind that restore partition is not there. Just install it without key and when through right click on My Computer and go directly to key location. There you'll find two options: activate now and change product key.
Select change key and enter one you recovered from your crashed hard drive to activate your windows.

This should work if the os in previous drive is the same installed on a new drive.
